Is it worth overclocking an AMD Athlon 3800+

Hi

I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.ghz and i was wondering if it is worth overclocking it its all i can afford right now.

it is bottle necking my gtx 750 ti would overclocking the cpu help that and how dangerous is it

That CPU is just so outdated (2004) you'd be wasting your time overclocking it, upgrade to something more modern.

Is that on socket 754? If so, as I recall (thinking way back here), 754 processors overclocked like a dream, but the OC didn't always have spectacular results in real-world performance. *Edit: just noticed the X2. I don't believe there were any dual core 754 processors, which would make it AM2 if I'm not mistaken.

 

Yes, it absolutely is holding back your 750 Ti. It's not dangerous at all, and there's no point in downgrading an otherwise respectable GPU just because your CPU is not capable of keeping up.

What socket is it? And where are you? I've got an old Quad core (I think, haven't booted it up yet, but the PC worked when I got it) Phenom CPU you could have if you're nearby.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

For one, the OP just said that the 3800+ is all they can afford. Two, how the hell is overclocking ever a waste of time? You're milking free performance out of an expensive component. I'd overclock my toaster if I could figure out how to swap out the resistors.

I would just buy the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+. They can be found on eBay for less than 10 bucks!

What part of "its all I can afford right now" isn't processing? The G4560 is $55-60, the 3800+ is about $3.

So you had the money to buy a GTX 750 Ti but no money to replace your decade old CPU? I'm sorry but you really did something wrong there. Where I live you can get Core 2 Duo machines for like 40 euros and a Radeon HD 5850 for 30ish euros. It's still dated hardware but you will still get a much better gaming experience while spending less than a 100 euros.

Overclocking that Athlon will take about 15 minutes. Athlon X2 CPUs are not difficult to dial in. If you'd ever used one (or even seen one), you'd know that. Is OCing going to make a ton of difference? No, but it's a performance boost, however slight, and any free performance boost regardless of the CPU's age is more than worth the 15 minutes it'll take to get to it.
