Is waiting for the rx 580 worth it?

jerodev

I'm currently building a new pc and I have chosen to put a Ryzen R7 1070X in it as a cpu.

I wanted to put a rx 580 8gb in my computer, however, these aren't in stock anywhere in the world.

So my question is: Is it worth waiting for the rx 580 to be in stock or should I buy a GTX 1060?

You already know the performance of 580 vs 1060 6GB, then you yourself can answer that question. Is it worth waiting a few months for a card that performs roughly the same, maybe a bit better in some games? Only you can answer that.

If you were asking is it worth waiting for Vega? Then that would be a valid question.

GTX 1060 6GB it's faster anyways...unless you need freesync.

For CPU get R5 1600 or R7 1700 instead...overclock the same and cost less.

A Ryzen 1700 is a better value if you plan to OC. And etherium mining seems to be pretty stable so far, so RX580s will pros be out for months. Best bet is to get a used card, like a 980 Ti or R9 390x or something like that. Or get a new 1060 6GB.

btw, if you want 8 core cpu, buy the 1700; the 1700 and 1700X have the same overclocking ceiling (4.0Ghz) and the 1700 cost less. Very few people can hit 4.1Ghz.

even 4.0GHz is scary as hell. There is a massive wall after something like 3.8GHz that requires a LOT of voltage to bust through.

unless you know there is some very specific reason you need an rx 580.... you should just do 1060 6GB. I haven't looked at GPU's in a while, but you could also just get an RX 480 if any are still available. 480/580 are identical, just that 580's come with mildly better clocks, a difference which can be made up by manually overclocking your 480.

but a 1060 is close enough in terms of overall performance that it doesn't really matter which way you go. they're very similarly performing and priced cards, and neither one has much of a serious advantage over the other.

Also if this is purely a gaming rig you should save yourself some money and step form from a 1700x to a 1600... you could then, if you so desired, use the saved money to invest in a GTX 1070 if you wish. Same overall price, but significantly better gaming performance with that change.

depends what resolution you game at and if you like to add massive amounts of graphical mods to your gaming.... but for 1080p (which is where this card is aimed) 6GB is quite a lot and very few games will leave you wanting. To put 6GB in perspective, 6GB was the amount which came on the top Maxwell GPU, the 980ti, and until a year ago was the best thing on the market (next to a titan) and was designed for 4k gaming.... so yes, 6GB is less, but it isn't exactly insufficient either.

I myself have a 980ti and game at 1080p the only time I've seen my 6GB come even remotely close to being maxed out was when I played ROTTR on max settings... and it actually did max my VRAM out, but it didn't negatively impact performance in any observable way either. Byeond that game its very difficult to get passed even 4GB of VRAM at 1080p in my experience.

No. It's on average more or less identical to the 6GB 1060. Get whichever.

If you're using either of these for 4K (like the Xbox One X does loooool) you're doing it wrong.

On that subject, though, it's worth mentioning that Pascal's colour compression is absolutely lightyears ahead of Polaris's, so that 6GB is going to go much further most of the time.

if it is your intent to go with higher than 1080p resolution, you should be looking at different cards than a 580/1060.... they will leave you wanting at higher resolutions.

Nah, I don't think I will be buying new monitors anytime soon. And even If I would I probably won't go directly for 4k, maybe 1440p.

well even if you went for 1440p, the 580/1060 would work at those resolutions okay, but you would likely have to turn settings down in some newer games to maintain good framerates. It is my recommendation you stay at 1080p for the lifespan of these cards if you lack the funds for a proper upgrade.

By a proper upgrade do you mean a 1070 or 1080? But I suppose these are overkill for 1080p gaming?

Depends on the refresh rate. I would even go so far as to say a 1070 isn't enough for 144hz 1080p gaming IMO (it would depend on your settings and games though).

but what I meant by "proper upgrade" is having the funds to both increase your monitor and GPU at once. It doesn't make any sense to invest n something like a gtx 1080 now if your monitor upgrade is going to be a year away (because by then there are likely to be better GPU's on the market) and it doesn't make much sense to upgrade the monitor first (especially if its a resolution upgrade) because then your lower end GPU wouldn't be able to keep up... at best you would be left with an identical gaming experience for your investment and at worst you would be left with a frustrating gaming experience. .

I vote for a RX 580 if you could find one but since you cannot then 1060 6GB not the 3GB model! :)

How about the AMD Vega, would it be worth waiting for these? Although it might also be another month before we see them popping up.

RX Vega is almost certainly going to be in another price bracket altogether... so if you want to save up...
