The Engineering Samples, so far, have pointed to a High and Low SKU.  Something like a 1920 & 1920X to go along with a 1960 & 1960X.  Though it strikes me that the 16c model is more likely to get 3 SKUs, just like the Ryzen 7.  Low SKUs on both core counts should come in at a lower TDP, something like 100w for 12c & 120w for 16c, while the top SKUs are around 155w. I have the distinct feeling that the 16c parts will be the most valuable.

Was gonna say that, every major release they render in those GTX 200 series shrouds, horrible PR move, makes the system look outdated based on a promo material alone, even though it isn't.

I can see Dell putting Raven Ridge in their Inspiron line and maybe in their Inspiron Gaming lineup(paired with a dGPU of course) but not in their Alienware lineup.  The Alienware Aurora, their smaller tower, doesn't have a Ryzen option surprisingly.

TBH I think the shrouds look cleaner and more subtle than the current ones, but to each their own.

What is the point of any of those specs for a gaming PC?

The only thing I could think of is multiple GPUs at 16x, but that's still a pretty much pointless advantage for gaming, given that you have to pay for the more expensive platform to get it.

A gamer would be paying for features it doesn't need. A workstation user could want such a system, but why release it under "Alienware" branding?

it is a over the top system and it is also made for high end gaming while streaming.

I'm pretty sure you don't need 12 cores minimum for the last part. As for the first part, if "over the top" means "pay for what you don't need", yes, it certainly is :P 

I mean, as I said, as a gaming PC it's not even overkill: it's not that it gives you gaming power you won't use, or that you will use but it's not worth the price. It's literally paying for hardware that will give exactly the same gaming performance as, let's say, a Ryzen 7 build. Not to mention Z270 builds: this is not even going to be the best gaming PC, just a gaming PC that costs an arm and a leg because it's full of expensive workstation hardware...

I loved it, the red matched my red RAM and it was the only series of cards from any manufacturer that had black PCB edges:

TR 12 & 16 core on a 120/140mm AIO is pretty promising for TR TDP & thermals. Would make a mint workstation.

Geekbench is terrible and it looks like just a validation test, if that, so the score isn't important.  I'm just curious about the name.  A little surprised they'd go with 1950X, unless there's a 1960X version we haven't seen yet.  (Which would fit the 5 SKU thought.)

If im going to spend money on a threadripper I am going to get the largest radiator or heatsink on the market.

Isn't it nice to see some competition? I've always stuck with intel but these days I'm actually looking seriously at AMD! That isn't a bad choice for sure with these latest announcements!

Calling it right now, Threadripper will be easier to cool than i7-7700K.

Yeah but they're (not confirmed yet) soldered and Kaby isn't :P

 

Even compared to the 140W Broadwell-E chips, this is 150W spread around 2 chips which are pretty far apart from each other, soldered to the IHS (theoretically, although if AMD was able to solder two separate chips to a single IHS then hats off to their engineers), so at the very least they will take less cooling than Broadwell-E to keep in safe temps.

 

AMD scored a huge win in performance per watt, achieving numbers Intel could only dream of as of the release of Ryzen.

Taking the numbers from here, under Prime95 load, an OC 1800X goes from 41w to 197w.  So a delta of 156w in total.  Roughly 20w per core from Idle to heavy Load. (AVX loads are heavier, it should be noted.)  In theory, at the same OC'd clocks on TR 16c, we should roughly expect 320w delta under load.  Probably around 370-390w total.

Which is lower than OC3D has for a FX-8320 under heavy OC. That's actually pretty funny.

 

From the same TechPowerUp article, it's roughly 28w per core delta (non-OC) under Prime95. (Compared to 14w per core delta on the 1800X at stock)  This generally means we can expect, at stock, the 12c TR parts to draw roughly the same power as the 6c X299.  Depending on setup & boost clocks, maybe the between the 6c & 8c parts.  It should mean the 16c TR will sit below the 10c X299 part (unless you're OC'ing hard, then it's above), while being generally below every Intel part from 12c through 18c.  Possibly by a whole lot.

 

I made a joke about 1500w PSUs in another thread.  It wasn't actually that much of a joke.  The people talking about massive custom loops for OC'd 18c X299 are going to need some monster PSUs for the power draw they're going to be getting.
