Sharp says that its TVs sold in North America are crap.

Sharp, a Japanese company fo9unded in 1912, and manufacturing TVs since the 70s, sold the company name and TV manufacturing back in 2015 to a Chinese company called Hisense for only $23.8 million US, due to under-performing sales figures in that market. That is pennies compared to fact that Foxconn bought 2/3rd of Sharp for 3.5 billion dollars.

It's suing Hisense to get back US rights to the name, claiming the firm is sullying the brand with "shoddily manufactured" TVs and misleading advertising, according to the WSJ.

 

Sharp rapid and careless sales of its TV business and rights to it brand name for TVs is costing dearly to the company. This push to do such action was not fully unjustified. The company was struggling financially in that sector, however they started to do better under Foxconn direction.

 

Sharp claims that their TV sold in North America are:

  1. Poorly Build
  2. Violates FCC rules on electromagnetic interference emissions
  3. Provides deceptive information on some specs such as screen brightness, picture size, and even 4K claims.
  4. And misleading advertisement

In court documents, Sharp says its brand and trademark "are at risk of being destroyed" by Hisense, which acquired a Mexican factory and five-year license to sell Sharp-branded products in North and South America. Sharp says the sets violate FCC rules on electromagnetic interference emissions, and that Hisense gave consumers deceptive information about picture size, brightness levels and the 4K resolution.

 

Sharp is taking to court Hisense because the company claims that the Hisense is destroying the Sharp brand and reputation.

 

Sharp is seeking in getting their name back.

Well then. I think I might have an old sharp TV so it should be safe. I think the best part is you can buy a Hisense for much less than a Sharp at Walmart

that's pretty unfortunate, as their RGBY pixel TVs used to be fairly skookum.

I  used to work in a store that sold all types of TV's, from the top of the line to the bottom of the barrel.  (This is around 2012) and back then I would never recomend a sharp TV.  There was 3 brands that without fail always had a constant flow of returns, those were Alba, Bush and Sharp. Granted, Sharp was never as bad as Alba and Bush, but they were bad enough that no one I knew would recommend one willingly.

 

So to me, it sounds like very little has actually changed.

We have hisense tvs here in Aus and they are royal turds! Advertise hdr with an update but apparently you have to call their support up and get them to send a thumb drive just to update the tv dafuq! Sad to see this happening although i dont really see how Sharp has a case, they are the ones who agreed to it in the first place...

It could violate the contract were they are selling TV's illegally. They said they violate FCC standards and some have false advertisement. This would be grounds for a law suit.
