Ryzen 1600 - RX 580 - Node 202

Nocte

Hello there,

just finished my first build and set up everything correctly.

Thanks to everyone who helped me in the build planning and with some building issues of last night.

Here is my new little ITX PC. I have chosen the Node 202 as I often travel between Italy and UK for University reasons and wanted to move from an old gaming laptop (i7-3360QM + NVIDIA GT 650M) to something more serious. This is also my very first desktop, I have been using laptops since I ever had a computer, so I am really looking forward to it.

I have to manage the cables between the monitor and the desktop better, but didn't really care as I was too excited about trying it.

Specifications (https://pcpartpicker.com/b/PgbXsY)

Yeah i wonder too. Also i wonder about the stability of this case when it's vertically oriented.

I will let you know the gaming temps when I play this afternoon. On idle, CPU is 40 C* and GPU is 45 C*.

The vertical orientation stability is provided by a stand included with the case.

EDIT: The motherboard is good in my opinion. BIOS could use some improvements. But I'm not fussed with it as I do not overclock. The board let my RAM reach 3200MHz on first try.

Nice, but why the Node for a desk setup? Why not a compact ITX or mATX tower with more expansion room?

orientation doesnt matter, as long as the outtake is not facing downwards. Intake can face downwards without an issue and a GPU outtake is at the back where the display connectors are, the intake around the fan.

CPU's fan however blows air out.

at 30C thats a bit warm but i run a lot more than your desktop so i just have a fan with me.

After trying Overwatch for about 30-40 minutes, the CPU was at 62 degrees max, and the GPU was hovering around 75 with frames capped at 154, and it would go over 83 if I left them uncapped (220+ fps).

I am now playing at capped frames at 154 fps to avoid overheating. I might consider some fans to put below the GPU.

EDIT: Temps don't go over 67C* with a more aggressive fan curve I set. @frozeNNN @Majestic

Than would be a great idea. I did the same in my ex Node 202 and had good temps with them installed.

Did you have a double fan or blower GPU? If double fan, did you experience any kind of "turbulence" between the four fans?

I had installed the MSI GTX 970, which doesn't spin the fans until 65 degrees which the corsair case fans managed to keep it under that. That was while playing WoT 1080p ultra settings. I have once tried WoT WQHD ultra setting on that 970, which went to 99% load and temps up to 75. The GPU fans started to spin pretty fast but no "turbulence" noticed, at least not in my single test with it. Hope it helped.

@Eibe I'd think you'd need to look at both Radeon Chill and Wattman (undervolting). You can probably tame that 580 in terms of thermal output.

I will give those two a look tomorrow evening after work. Thanks!

Hey, I was considering to try an undervolt with my GPU of about 80mV. However, I wanted to do it with Trixx as it allows to check the option not to load the settings at start-up. Do you think TrixX is still ok or should I use Wattman?

Don't try and go for a specific number. Just do it in steps. And whatever programm works, works. Just make sure to monitor it to verify it's actually working.

Sell that 580 for profit right now!

And it won't be small profit, either.

I don't really like the concept of Radeon Chill for FPS games. I might use it for games like WoW though.

I have underclocked my card to 480 levels and managed a stable undervolt of -100mV (from 1150 to 1050). I might try something lower in the next days, but temps don't go over 70C* now during benchmarks (before they were about 7C* more). Thanks for the tip.
