What "Really Grinds Your Gears"??? when buying and selling tech?

Evening Gent's and Lassies,

So after watching Scrapyard Wars, I was compelled to seek out what the used parts market has on offer in my area...and being that I've rarely bought second hand stuff (the last thing was in around 2007 and from eBay). I found people tend to severely overprice what they think things are worth. Case and point below:

 cfc6b0f93d2bd8f7b0d0f77779e6819a.png

This post was made on Gumtree 16 days ago...The system is "about a year old"...and it retails for in excess of £1200!!!

For comparison, a used 960 can be had for anywhere between £90 - £190 depending on memory and design etc.

Whatever shop you bought that from...get a refund...you got robbed!

So what grinds your gears when it comes to buying and selling tech?

sold a quadro 4000 once, the guy called me 10 minutes after leaving accusing me of being a scumbag because he couldnt get anything out the DP ports.

he hadn't installed the drivers, didn't apologise when i politely pointed out that he was being a moron.

Now when i sell things i include the disclaimer that the buyer is not entitled to tech support after purchase, If a guy buys a quadro, you can safely assume that he knows basic shit like what a driver is ??

reminds me that i saw a person selling a C2D machine as an "edeting beast" that aparently did video rendering at light speed, the reason he wanted $1000 for it was that it had about 4TB of storage and was in an EPIC super tower case but that poor poor C2D wont be doing video work at a fun pace any day

These don't really matter for SyW but in general these are the most annoying

Overpricing

No box - not a deal breaker but having the box is always a plus

unclear or shady stories - this happened to me when i was looking for an SSD, the seller told me the drive was new and sealed and he bought it accidentally to the seal is broken and i bought for someone and they didn't want it

not willing to barter - if you're selling stuff on a auction site like eBay it's rare you ever get what you want and those people that won't budge just slight are really annoying...

had an idiot i sold a computer to remove the SATA cable for the harddrive and then blamed me that it wasent booting. i fixed it but was very clear that i would not touch that computer again nor help them with any issues as soon as they were out of my door. three weeks later they claim i should fix the computer because its slow. im guessing it was riddled with malware and shit because aparently it took them 20min to boot into the OS on an ok speed HDD... i told them to get an SSD and that i will not do anything about it and they got super mad trying to guilt me saying i scammed a 10yo for $500.... my god were they idiots

People who try to sell used peripherals for the same prices as brand new, I searched for about 2 months to finally find an used Corsair M65 RGB in great condition for half the brand new price, bought it immediately and all went fine... not so lucky with mechanical keyboards though, even several months used ones people still ask about the brand new pricing which I personally feel it's too high.

Anything "gaming" is over priced. Seen a dirt bag trying to oversell his "gaming" rig. In a generic Thermaltake case that I've seen a billion times, didn't dust it out, fans blowing backwards on the exhaust.... It had an Athlon for crying out loud.

He said it was better than most off the shelf manufacturer gaming machines. You m ow why?

How to Spot Overprice Point 2: He built it himself.

Custom builds are worth sweet money.

I got scammed on my PC (specs in my signature, pretty much everything but PSU, peripherals, GPU, and HDD are stock).

They said that the computer worked great, but the HDD was dying and when I downloaded Crystal Disk Info, it said the HDD was "caution" (you probably know what I mean if you've used the software before) and it had over 42,000 runtime hours on it. It took literally minutes to just do something like open Chrome, or even the FUCKING START MENU. I also hate when people won't separate an item, but won't discount it if you buy both items. One time I was going to buy a super cheap FX 8350 (don't judge, it was super cheap) that came with a dead (maybe) motherboard and a Fractal Design Define R4 for something like $80. I only wanted the CPU and maybe motherboard because I might've been able to fix it, but not the case. He wouldn't separate it or give me a discount for taking all of the items...

My rant is over.

What peeves me when buying tech is when people don't take pride in their gear. I once bought a used Logitech G500 laser mouse, and it arrived in absolutely gross condition. I get it, many people don't find their own brand of filth disgusting... but this G500 looked like it had never been cleaned. I spent about 10 minutes scrubbing it with Lysol wipes, each wipe going from black, to gray, til eventually nothing more came off. It looked brand new after that, but it's just inconsiderate for a seller to neglect basic cleaning before selling it.

What peeves me when selling is the classic low ball. I price my items to move, which is generally 60-80% of their MSRP if they're newer. I make it a point to check what the recent sold prices were on ebay and what people are listing the same/similar items for on Craigslist and forums and typically price match the lowest comparable listing. Without fail, there are lowballers or threadcrappers who have to shit on my price.

Case in point... listed a HD 7970 Twin Frozr III last year for $60. If you go on ebay right now, there are sold units for $80 on up, many not including shipping costs. Some ahole took time out of his day to tell me that the card is 10 years old (wrong: it launched in Dec 2011), that my price was outrageous, and to contact him when I'm willing to accept $20. I just deleted the email.

When people say "what is the lowest you will take?". No. It doesn't work that way. Make me an offer and I will come back with a counter-offer. ugh.

People who inquire with just an offer number, and usually it's a low-ball offer. I ignore those people and even put "low-ballers will be ignored" right in the ad. >_<
