Ok, so an:

intel pentilim

some itx mobo

8 or 16gb stick of ddr4

Fractal design node 304

2 wd red 4tb hdd

Usb for unraid

did I miss anything?

Dont forget a PSU ;)

Just make sure with the CPU you stick with a G series Pentium or Celeron - they all have onboard graphics so you wont require a GPU.

You cant really go past the Intel G4560 for price to performance in the low tier, if you want to save another $20 though you could also just do a celeron like a G3930

Something like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Pentium G4560 3.5GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($66.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock - H270M-ITX/ac Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($91.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill - Aegis 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  ($54.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital - Red 4TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($135.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Storage: Western Digital - Red 4TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($135.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Case: Fractal Design - Node 304 Mini ITX Tower Case  ($84.90 @ OutletPC)
Power Supply: SeaSonic - G 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($69.39 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $640.23
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

You might also be interested in some other more NAS oriented case options (if your budget allows for any of these):

Silverstone DS380B has 8 hotswap bays

iStarUSA S-35-DE5 has 5 hotswap bays

Norcotek ITX-S4 has 4 hotswap bays

Norcotek ITX-S8 has 8 hotswap bays

iStarUSA S917 has 7 5.25" bays (You can install 2 x hotswap bays such as this)

iStarUSA S915 with 5 x 5.25" bays (As above but less bays)

Is it ok if I use 3 wd red 4tb drives but do I use raid and if so which one

You don't need ECC memory for this kind of server. ECC memory use only mission critical servers and very very important workstations. Rock on that boiii FreeNAS or if you want Windows Server 2016 but throw in SSD and create RAID array in Storage Spaces.

This mobo only has 4 sata ports can I just get lag 1151 itx mobo with more ports?

then get one 4TB WD black and one blue drives. Black for NAS and blue for backup.

Or buy 2X2TB black for RAID0 and one blue for backup. Back up drive doesnt need to be so expensive because it wont be used as much. I keep all my old drives and drives from busted laptops as backup.

A bronze psu? For a nas that will be going for most of the day.

Theres very little real world difference between a bronze and a gold PSU for a home NAS - you'll probably not be running it above 15% load 99% of the time, so the efficiency difference is negligible.

Theres also better options out there for running a NAS for home than FreeNAS. With FreeNAS you need to build the whole array at one time, its not flexible, and it has a lot of functions you probably don't need. You might want to consider looking at unRAID, Rockstor, OpenMediaVault, Ubuntu with MDADM, or even just Windows Storage Spaces.

Honestly, I would just recommend getting one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/Synology-Station-Network-Attached-DS415play/dp/B00LO3KW7S

and create a 4-disk raid5, or a 3-disk raid5 + 1 backup disk.

Synology has a featured called QuickConnect for accessing it via the internet.

Ok lets get some of the constraints.

What OS do what want to use? Would you be okay with a linux based OS?

How many drives would you be using?

3.5inch HDDs or 2.5inch HDDs?

Why the need for ECC memory? Will you be using a UPS?

Are you hoping to keep the machine on 24/7?

Any other requirements?

How much would a ups cost for my rig and the nas

also if it's runnng 24/7 what changes would have to be made?

Which os?

It uses a proprietary OS by Synology called DSM.

Synology is one of the leaders in consumer NAS appliances.

I would recommend getting FreeNAS out of your mind - its not really suited for a low number of drives.

But no - FreeNAS is a FreeBSD (Unix based) operating system that is installed onto x86 (PC) hardware.

This is a full NAS - it includes all the hardware and its own software. Just plug drives in - open the webpage, and configure it how you want.

The only reason to really build a NAS, is if you want functionality beyond what a pre-built can deliver (though Synology DSM supports docker), or if you need expandability or to do advanced RAID. Neither of these things you can do with 3 drives and FreeNAS.

I understand this howerver there are 2 reasons I have decided to biuld instead of buy

1. It's genrely cheaper and it's easier to expand

2. For me building pc's are fun and it gives me great satisfaction when my finished system works and does what I want it to do

What does drive number have to do with anything? I have a FreeNAS system with 2 drives. I don't know why it's not a good, (generally, with some help) beginner friendly OS?

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2
