First Android-Rooting Trojan With Code Injection Ability Found On Google Play Store

A new Android-rooting malware with an ability to disable device’ security settings in an effort to perform malicious tasks in the background has been detected on the official Play Store.

What's interesting? The app was smart enough to fool Google security mechanism by first pretending itself to be a clean app and then temporarily replacing it with a malicious version.

Dvmap Trojan works on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Android, which once installed, attempts to gain root access on the device and tries to install several modules on the system including a few written in Chinese, along with a malicious app called "com.qualcmm.timeservices."

To make sure the malicious module gets executed with system rights, the malware overwrites system's runtime libraries depending on which Android version the device is running.


To complete the installation of the above-mentioned malicious app, the Trojan with system rights turns off "Verify Apps," feature and modify system setting to allow app installation from 3rd party app stores.

Sounds like google needs to force apps getting scanned even if it's only an update, before pushing the update to the store.

thats why i got a nexus 5x, stock without much crap i don't need and still updated to this day (currently running android beta and android 8 is good, but i liked the dark theme in 7)

breaks warranty and some OEM phones have modified android versions and some "jailbreaking" methods don't work (also it's called rooting)

and some also have anti-rooting methods implemented into them to ensure that users don't use their phone the way the manufactures want them to

I don't like the Facebook app. I can disable but not remove. I cannot disable if I want to use Samsung VR. I have owned just sony and Samsung and they all had Facebook app.

I don't like the Facebook app. I can disable but not remove. I cannot disable if I want to use Samsung VR. I have owned just sony and Samsung and they all had Facebook app.

You can only hide these from the home screen. You cannot delete its program data. They take up space on your storage regardless. Whether or not some of these apps are useful or useless is up to the discretion of the user.

It pretty much is since the base model is now 32GB, no one cares about a few hundred megabytes.

 

And about half-3/4 the default apps you list are apps that everyone with an iphone uses.

P.S. sorry apparently snarky sarcasm doesn't transfer very well in text. I don't actually have any issue with iOS other than from a software freedom standpoint.

 

As for actual content to add to the argument, the issue with Android is not so much the lack of control on the Play Store. While heuristic analysis is never perfect it's the best option currently available.

 

Notice too that the *VAST* majority of these attacks are targeting absolutely ancient OSes. These aren't targeting your modern Android 6/7 phones, they're targeted at Android 4 and sometimes 5.

 

Compare that to iOS 7 devices which has been the target of a number of attacks now. In a year or so I imagine the case will be very much the same with the iPhone 4s/5/5c with them being discontinued for updates with iOS 11.

 

Like Apple, as soon as they're detected Google pulls them off the store, and retroactively uninstalls them from devices to do as much damage cleanup as they can.

 

The bigger issue at hand is the lack of vendors updating their devices properly, and the lack of users upgrading to new hardware in a reasonable time span. Project Treble in Android O should hopefully help with that first part if vendors impliment it, but it'll be a while for people to see.

 

As for why Android sees more of these attacks than iOS? Android has 82% of the market vs the 18% that iOS has. That combined with the fact that a lot more of the devices are running absolutely ancient versions of the OS, and we're often running old unpatched kernels when they were first released means that they're a far easier target. As always this is why I never recommend a non-nexus or non-pixel device.

There is a reason why app removal tools exists. They are designed for a specific niche of users. Older model users. 8GB users. Users who have taken tons of videos and photos on their phone; with many apps they deem more essential than the default ones.

 

Imagine always getting the out of disk space prompt. Imagine getting so low on data you capture a wonderful moment of a family member but unable to store it. Imagine unable to store a video of your baby's first steps or words. Imagine unable to store a last picture with a loved one. A few hundred megabytes could mean the world to them.

 

I can imagine you refuting this argument by saying they could prepare, but just because most users don't see the purpose of it does not nullify it for others. Hiding to them is not the same as removing.

Which means corporations who deploy Android phones to their employees are pretty much screwed once one of their devices gets infected. I know rooting/jailbreaking a company-issued phone/tablet is against company rules and can become grounds for termination of employment.
