48 hour VR Immersion for Science.

WMGroomAK

With VR becoming more accessible and having more content, you may wonder what it would be like to spend your life inside the machine?  Dean Johnson, head of Innovation from Bandwidth and Sarah Jones from Coventry University took on this challenge for 48-hours to put their lives and bodies on the line just so you don't have to and survived.  This wasn't just a simple plug into headset and watch movies for 48-hour experience, but would appear to be more of a combination of VR and AR experience where they went through their lives and had experiences, such as go kart racing, getting a tattoo or wing walking while wearing VR headsets.

Quote

Johnson has been challenging the rules of consumer VR from the beginning -- when virtual reality hit the mainstream last year, he spent 24 hours immersed in a mix of Rift, Vive and Gear VR experiences, setting an unofficial record for longest time in virtual reality. This year, he doubled that effort, recruiting Sarah Jones from Coventry University to join him in two days of extreme VR immersion -- breaking for only five minutes each hour to record vlogs and use the facilities.

The experiment was designed to question the arbitrary limits of VR-use time and help expose virtual reality to a wider consumer audience, but it wasn't a PR stunt for any specific headset manufacturer. "In fact, it was quite the opposite," he says. Every company he invited to participate in the project turned him down. "Mostly because they thought we'd die," he joked.

The fears of the likes of Oculus VR and HTC weren't completely unfounded. Johnson didn't just spend two days watching movies and playing games in virtual reality -- he wore VR goggles while driving go-karts, getting tattoos and walking across the wings of an airplane in-flight. "We wanted it to be as physical as possible," he says. "How extreme do you need to get with the physical additions to VR to make it feel real?" It sounds almost like a silly question, but when you're wearing a headset that partially blinds you to your environment, the influence of your mixed reality could have unexpected results.

This seems like an awesome experiment in showing how well the VR and AR technology is advancing as well as showing some of the current limitations that VR developers and set manufacturers still may want to overcome.  Of course, I don't think we're quite yet to the point where people will be trying to live in VR for everything.  Some takeaways on the limitations are that VR headsets definitely are not designed for long term comfort and it would appear that the whole saying about sitting too close to the TV being bad for your eyes may have some strength behind it with this as well considering it took a few days for his eyes to readjust.

Someone spent I think 24 hours or was it like a week? In VR and they vomited constantly

I would have been bored out of my mind doing the same things for so long.. And on top of that having to stand for 36 hours. No way I would have lasted in this experiment

I wouldn't last an hour.

I mean I did Total Recall a couple weeks ago and only lasted about... Wait... Oh shit.

If they had done just the same thing like playing the same games for 48-hours, then yes, it would have been boring, but they actually went out and lived their lives in VR, not sitting on the couch.  They were driving go-karts with the VR headset on and even went for a ride on an airplane wing walking deal while wearing the headset.  Kind of agree with Mr. Johnson that if they had done the wing walk while the headset was displaying a different scene, like riding on the back of dragon, that it would be a much cooler experience.  A lot of this involved transitioning between VR devices like using the Gear VR for non-tethered portions and the Vive/Rift for other portions.

I don't necessarily think I would get bored, it just makes me nauseous. :S

I've tried it a few times, like the rollercoaster one and a first person view game and something about it made me sick. Which is strange because I don't get motion sickness from planes, cars, boats, or rollercoasters. Maybe it's something to do with my mind knowing my body isn't moving.

I think it is the conflicting sensory information combined with maybe a bit of lag in perception.  Like if you were walking with a Gear VR on, what you see and the motion you feel by walking are probably not going to be perfectly aligned to what you expect to see and feel with it off...  Of course, the more/longer you wear it, the less of an issue there may be, sort of like those videos of soccer players playing with glasses that inverse their vision, where the brain begins to make adjustments.

the AR headset tattoo stuff sounds like simulating a dissociation/derealization. i mean all of this is just pop science not actual science but it does try to portray interesting experiments that might be worth exploring.

It definitely brings forward areas that can have further study applied and maybe even future clinical trials for using this in medical fields or just general life improvement fields...

i know VR is already being used long and wide in the mental health sector, they have been using that for i think 2 years now. i mean it isn't mainstream but its not obscure at all, every treatment center i applied at had some program for it.

Yeah urm no. Once something actually very interesting gets on VR I wouldn't be interested.

I just dont understand of what they mean by lived their lives? Is there a program custom made for this or are they using just a bunch of games?

Go-karting and wing walk would occupy me for like 3 hours before I got bored.

Didn't I see this in southpark (or some other credible documentary)?  It went horribly wrong from memory.  We risk ending up in the matrix if we keep this habit up.

What happened to his vision?Staring at something that is few cm in front of your eyes for 2 days (without breaks?) certainly can't be good.

Sounds like you tried the wrong kinds of content. Rollercoaster VR is a great way to make yourself nauseous. Just stay away from that kind of content, at least until you've built up some tolerance.

The lenses bend the light, so it's no worse than focusing on a TV screen across the room.

That is pretty much exactly what is happening. Your eyes are telling you that you are moving and your inner ear does not agree so your body freaks out and you get nauseous.

If you try some room scale games on the Vive/Rift where you are actually walking around your play space you shouldn't feel sick as your eyes and ears will agree when you are moving.

Avoid the analog locomotion mechanics as well and stick to teleport mode where you instantly move from one place to another without any sense of acceleration.

Some good games for this are:

The Lab

Arizona Sunshine

Robo Recall

Budget Cuts Demo

Vivecraft/Minecraft for Oculus

You can build a tolerance to the Sim Sickness if you stop as soon as you feel a little ill and wait a few hours before trying again. Eventually you'll find you can play longer and longer.

I used to get sick playing Elite Dangerous, DCS World, and Project Cars after 5 mins when I first got into VR. Now I can play for hours in cockpit games and not feel a thing (Unless I spin out in a racing sim).

I still get sick with analog locomotion in first person shooters but it's slowly getting better.

As far as what to do for 48 hours, Playing games the whole time would get pretty tiring but you could alwasy hang out in social VR apps like Altspace VR, SteamVR Home, or that VR facebook messenger program.
