nvidia In this mid 2017, should I wait for NVIDIA's next platform or should I buy a gtx 1060 (Max extent of my GPU budget)

So, I am thinking about building a new system within this month or the next. The part that I'm confused about is "Graphics Card" option.

Apart from gaming, I also intend to use the GPU to do some simulation of parallel programming on the CUDA platform by NVIDIA. Hence my choice was initially GTX 1060 6GB card. But, looking at the fact that it has been a year since its release, I was wondering if the next gen from NVIDIA would be coming out anytime soon. Can anyone suggest me what should I do?

If release patterns hold (give or take 1.5 to 2 years), the earliest a new card will show up is Q4 2017 or Q1 2018. But it's likely NVIDIA isn't going to announce anything until AMD release Vega to the consumer market.

 

So get the GTX 1060 6GB, otherwise you'll be waiting a while.

 

EDIT: Also it's unlikely NVIDIA will significantly price drop the GTX 1060 when Vega releases.

Volta has no official launch date, what i have heard of speculations people are saying Q1 2018 but i doubt that number. it all depends on how much you can wait, the 1060 will do a fine job probably but you can always grab a 1070 or 1080 or whatever off the used market once Volta drops if it happens to be great

Volta wont be out until around Q1-Q2 2018, Vega wont be out for a few months either. Just buy now (Either a 1060 or 580).

If you do CUDA intensive stuff, possibly look at the 980ti.  Older architecture aside it's the best CUDA per dollar card on the used market.  In the US it's not going for a lot more than the 1060.

Volta is gonna be at least another half year, probably year if you ask me (usually it's a new arch every two years). Just get a 1060.

Would you consider a second hand GTX 980ti? you might find a couple for a good pricing and those are very good on CUDA acceleration.

the 10 series is still pretty new so I doubt there will be anything new in the near future. Get the 1060 and enjoy.

thats not entirely true, the launch of the 1080ti forced everything down into a lower price for a while

And the launch of the R9 Fury did nothing to bring the price of the GeForce 900, or even the rest of the R9 200 300 series down (I could be wrong about the R9 200 though).

 

All I'm saying is you can't expect significant price drops. If there's going to be a price drop on the GTX 1060, it's likely going to be at best like 10%, not 25%.

 

EDIT: I think I'm confusing the R9 200 series with the R9 300 series.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestion. Hence I've decided to buy a refubrished/used 980 ti for now. And change later if I need depending on the situation after volta releases. You guys have been big help. Thanks
