Processor Microcode Update Error

Guest

I put an Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 into my HP xw4400 Workstation, and on boot I'm getting an "1801-Microcode Update Error", which apparently means the motherboard doesn't recognize the stepping of the CPU. Looking at HP's site after I did this, I discovered that this motherboard doesn't actually support the Q6600, however I can still bypass the error by pushing F1, and ignore it. Windows detects the CPU, identifies it, I can view all four cores in Task Manager, and all the temperatures of them in SpeedFan. It seems to be working fine. Only issue is the error on boot is annoying, and I'm worried it might cause a problem when upgrading to 64-bit Windows 7.

How to fix?

Wow,

You're very helpful.

In the BOIS, there may be a feature to disable these warnings. Also try a BIOS update.

Upgrading to windows 7 64BIT should be fine but make sure you're there to press f1 when it reboots.

I've updated the BIOS, and searched through the settings. Nothing. I might just have to live with pushing F1 on boot until I get a new motherboard.

YOu could also contact HP to see if theres a way to bypass this.

Have you also cleared the CMOS?

I have, some motherboards have a "Ignore Warnings".

Ive even seen some fast boot options skip A LOT of post tests.

Hmm, don't exactly want to skip any POST tests, these are ten-year-old components. I'll see if there's an option, though.

I find post tests do nothing except test ram.

I find them more annoying than anything.

Well, clearly these ones check the CPU too. I'll reboot now and check the BIOS.

Quick boot setting was already enabled in the BIOS. Is clearing the CMOS safe? It'll just restore the BIOS settings to default, right?
