1070 SLI overkill for ultrawide 1080p 144Hz?

Gerr

My main gaming system is an OC'ed 6600K with a pair of 1070's in SLI.  I did have a 27" 1440p 144Hz monitor, but that died and I replaced it with a 35" Curved Ultrawide 1080p 144Hz.  I prefer to max out my graphical settings on the games I play and am currently playing Witcher 3.  I know a single 1070 doesn't max out this monitor to 144 FPS, but a pair of them in SLI does.

My question is if a pair of 1070's is overkill and might it be better to sell them both and buy a single 1080?  A 1080 Ti would be on par with 1070's in SLI, so that would be overkill also.

Thoughts?

If it's ultrawide, it's not 1080p, but 2560x1080, presumably. I think, given your commitment to higher quality settings, SLI 1070's isn't overkill, given you're using a 144 Hz monitor.

My 6600K is OC'ed to 4.6Ghz, cooled by a Corsair 100i v2.  But I will be upgrading to a 7700K come Black Friday/Xmas time frame.

And yes, Ultrawide 1080p = 2560x1080.  Specifically, I have the Benq XR3501.

I would trade for a 1080 Ti, but not for just a regular 1080.  I just said that I would consider selling both and getting a regular 1080 if they was overkill.  I would just pocket the difference, or buy a G12 & AIO to liquid cool the 1080.

I guess just for an ultra wide u could get by with a single 1080. I wouldn't. I play surround though. They supposedly had some new tech for surround but I don't see it. Also still can't keep up with two old flash ships.

If it make for a better setup get one card

I had both 1070's running in SLI just fine in my system for my old monitor.  Ran them for a while with the new one, then pulled one out to see the difference.
