U.2 vs M.2!!!

Welcome fellow wanderer! 

Im looking for a gaming motherboard between 2500Skr($286,83) and 4000Skr($458,93). When I was looking through the different alternatives I noticed something called U.2, I knew there were M.2s but I never thought about a U.2. So what is this mysterious harddrive? Is it faster than M.2? Stronger?

M.2 and U.2 are different physical connectors. Rest is the same between them (NVMe, PCI-E Gen3 x4 or w/e the specs are).

U.2 is an all but dead form factor. I think other than the Intel 750 SSD there are almost no drives that support it. High end boards will throw it on there so that they can say "has every feature you could ever want" except no one really WANTS U.2 (It's like the HD-DVD vs bluray, where bluray just won and HD-DVD died out after a couple of years)

U.2 is like the sata version of m.2. They're both pcie 3.0 x4, but whereas with m.2 you're supposed to screw the ssd onto the mobo, with u.2 you use a cable to connect your u.2 2.5" drive to the mobo's u.2 port. M.2 is better, since there aren't a lot of u.2 SSDs out there.

I like the M.2 more as well but the fact is that when using U.2 even if dead/no drives available and you'll need a cable to connect the drive, it is better for temperatures as it is like a SSD and won't be heated up by your CPU or GPU and in the future they could incorporate heat sinks into the chassi of an U.2 drive but that's about it.

 

Personally i like the m.2 as you don't have any cables going from the motherboard to the drive and as I'm fortunate enough having an UnRaid fileserver where i store everything else except games.
