Yeah ik, hence why I'm still a bit skeptical about that explanation  

 

The part about the Pentium 4 does seem to make a bit of sense in his favor though, since they were soldered and had smaller dies. At the same time though, I just looked it up and it looks like the P4 had a max operating temperature of around 70C instead, which could explain why (thermal cycling isn't as intense).

I still cant believe in this day and age CPU's and GPU's cost 1000$+ and nothing affordable for sub 150$ price range with decent performance, such a small piece of silicon that cost so much, still pisses me off.

They still make cost effective mainstream parts. You just won't be getting HEDT parts anywhere near that cost. $1k HEDT parts have been common for some time now.

Same TIM, tweaks made to the IHS installation is what gave DC a better thermal profile than a directly comparable preceding Haswell counterpart.

A very different TIM. A MUCH MUCH better one. Delidding a 4790k isn't actually very useful.

With cooling I havent had any experiencing cooling the 7700k mostly because I had no interest in the chip and just didnt care. If its that hard to cool then my bad. But what is considered cool and are these being OC? Or is it seen with non-OC chips as well?

 

Like I said, if its my ignorance than I can take the blame. I just have a bias after watching person after person that I know buy HEDT, throw a decent cooler on it and call it a day. I dont know any of them that OCed or even cared much about life or temps.

 

 

 I have a 3770k and it's gotten damaged after overclocking for a fucking year. 1.27v 4.4ghz.

uhh you know how stupidly hot X99 gets? that is while its soldered , imagine them now running even HOTTER as the poor tim cant keep up , we saw it on the i7 7700k already

What exact approach does AMD take with Ryzen and stuff. I've heard that higher end chips may use soldering and lower end chips may not, but I don't know any details.

Ryzen is soldered. All previous Intel HEDT CPUs were soldered. Recent (since Ivy Bridge) consumer Intel chips haven't been soldered.

I can understand them skimping on main stream gear. That stuff doesn't pump out that much heat and people are looking for a good price-performance figure. With these "extreme" chips, people are seriously happy to fork out massive cash for the absolute best out there, expecting Intel to give them just that. Sadly, they're shafting the buyer a little and not giving them the best they can do.
