Intel to Launch 18-Core/36-Thread "Core i9-7980XE" Skylake-X CPU

So, you'd think that AMD has the core count game in the bag with their upcoming 16C/32T Threadripper CPU right? "Good one mate", says Intel, with rumours circulating of the existence of the i9-7980XE with its 18 cores and 36 threads. There's not a whole lot of info about the Skylake-X CPU in question other than two slides which actually look legitimate.

Jokes aside, the creation of this CPU is obviously the result of the recently revived competition between AMD and Intel so thanks AMD for that. I'm also interested in the price, because knowing Intel, it's going to cost you an arm and a leg. But who cares, when you have a 18 core CPU just for gaming?

 

The core wars are about to begin and I'm excited.

I don't get why is Intel retiring the k and copying AMD's x.... and this xe? this way here in a couple of years we'll have Intel Core i11 9875XEK 2.0

what is the point? The kind of person that would need 36 threads would go for a Xeon? I'd rather see a 10 core with a base clock of a 7700k

That is why these are all to be ignored, gotta wait for Intel's 10nm Canon Lake architecture with its featuring 6c/12t mainstream i7 with the latest IPC and 5ghz base clocks, that will be the true gaming monster.

 

For content creation I doubt any of these Skylake-X will be any better than Ryzen 7 line up, especially considering Intel's usual pricing, I love my 1800x.

I'm good with my 1700. It performs exactly to what I expected of it.

 

The extra money I had set aside for X299 was put into a 1080 TI, which was a HUGE upgrade for me.
