the first one has an interesting PCI-e one up from the bottom... whats that? seems to have an open back, i would say its for when you somehow run out of 16x size slots and need another card in that size

Are those SODIMM slots on the ITX board? Also, that socket is like half the boards size

That's a open end pcie x4

X99 deluxe had one too. The deluxe 2, they went back to a x1.

I was explaining to you what that interesting slot was. Open end, like what you just said, allows installation of x8 or x16 cards.

Why are they LGA 2011-3? I thought X299 is supposed to be a new socket?

It is a new socket, physical size is still the same, just a lot more pins. 2066 to be exact. Some might have more like the OC socket done with some x99 boards.

That's in line with everything I have heard, but in those pictures in the OP you can clearly see "LGA 2011-3" on them. Just using old covers?

The cpu retention module is the same so yes, they're just using old 2011-3 protective covers, pins on the socket has increased to 2066.
