WoW Not Rock Solid 144 FPS on 1600X + 1070?

Hey folks, I got a quick question here. Today I decided to pick up Legion and resub to WoW for the first time in several years, and I've got a question about the game's performance. My rig is in my signature, and apparently that's not enough to max the game and run it at 144 fps (I use a 144 Hz monitor). Is that really the case, or is something messed up here?

Benchmarks put my system about where it should be. Unigine Valley on the Extreme HD preset at 1080p scores around 90+ fps and Cinebench scores 1230 multi-threaded and 163 single-threaded as nothing is currently overclocked. So nothing seems wrong with the on-paper performance.

Is WoW just badly optimized or badly optimized for Ryzen? It never seems to max out GPU usage.

Their engine is over a decade old so yes, it's unoptimized AF. It doesn't matter how powerful your rig is, your fps is going to tank in certain legion zones (suramar) as well as raids if your settings are maxed.

Mine is a 3200 MHz kit that currently won't boot any higher than 2400 MHz on the latest 0613 BIOS (or any previous one). I tried manually adjusting timings, adding DRAM voltage, increasing SOC voltage, etc. Nothing works, so I'm waiting for the fated AGESA update next month.

I've noticed that. Just wasn't aware that it has this big of an impact for this old of a game. Fortunately I've never dipped below 80 fps in dense areas yet, and in less-dense areas it saturates the full 144 Hz easily. I was just wondering if what I was experiencing is normal.

Depends where you are at, but in raids and cities its going to run poorly.

Turn down shadows and tweak your AA settings. Those kill framerates.

Yeah, pretty much. Lots of stuff going on kills framerates. It also may not have ryzen support yet. I don't know that because I quit some time ago.

I didn't just spend $750 on a new rig to play a 13 year old game on low settings. Lol.

More or less I was just wondering if the frame dips I've been experiencing in this game are normal (paranoid about my first build, y'know?). In dense areas I sit at around 80 fps and in less dense areas I'm usually over 144.

Why do you need anything more than low settings for wow..?

It's just an mmo...

If you haven't clean installed windows on the new hardware then that's probably why your performance isn't good.

You could ask that for literally any game out there. After all, they're just video games.

And why? Because I can. Why I want to play a game at high graphics is not what this thread is about.

You should've done your due diligence then. On a CPU bound game your upgrade was likely worth around 2% maximum. Congratz!

first of all, wow is a very old unoptimized MMO( seriously, its really old, the devs don't care anymore), you really won't notice the difference between 120fps and 144fps in games such as wow.

There's actually a huge difference between my 980X and the R5. WoW's not the only CPU-bound game I play. (My framerate tripled in Heroes of the Storm. On the 980X it would dip to 30 fps in teamfights).

Could do without the snide attitude, though. Idk why people can't just answer my question.

it would line more with the devs, here a video of wow running low as 35 fps on a 6700k( a high IPC gaming cpu the game can't take advantage of)

not to be rude, wow is not vary optimized, not even a 6700k+ gtx 1070 can play it at a constant FPS, the devs needs to really catch up rather than sleeping.

Now that's what I wanted to know. So high settings (not using Ultra High shadows and stuff since I can't even see a difference) with 80 fps in dense areas and over 144 fps in less dense areas is pretty much in-line with where it should be.
