Considering that if the iGPU is powerful enough to negate the need for a dGPU, wouldn't that mean that it could become even smaller?  (although you might as well just buy a nuc-sized computer off the shelf).

Not if you don't include a dGPU. In fact, it can be a lot smaller without a dGPU  (and completely ignores the point of this build).

The rumoured performance of the Vega iGPU is about equal to a GTX 1030 (or an MX150, can’t remember). Basically, I’d get that mobo just because it’s cool.

I thought we only had performance numbers for mobile parts and not desktop parts. The R5 2500U almost matches the MX150 in gaming (so the R7 2700U probably can match it and maybe even outperform it) so I would have thought desktop parts would maybe offer more performance, especially how they won't be limited to 15W standard TDP and 25W up-configured TDP.

I've traced the PC not booting to a bad sata cable, but I don't have a long enough replacement

 

My monitor also doesn't work, due to the fact its from HP.
