What phone should i buy?

Today marks the day my Samsung galaxy s4 just bit the dust which means only one thing, I need a replacement.

Although my s4 wasn't perfect i still have some basic requirements:

- Waterproof (you can probably guess why that's first on the list)

- Durable 

- Not from apple

- New enough to get regular updates for several more versions of android

- under $700 (i'm not 100% firm on that)

- Head phone jack, Why is this a problem in the first place?

- Amoled display (at least 1920x1080

- Great battery life

- Easy to find oem or quality replacement parts on my own if i ever break it

 

Now that i think about it, a galaxy s8 would be perfect, the google pixel (i'll make an exception for waterproofing) is too expensive and the waiting list is obnoxious. If you have any recommendations please let me know!

 

 Current opinions:

- OnePlus 3T doesn't have an amoled display

- Samsung is aweful at updates, only supporting three versions or so after launch

- Google pixel is way out of budget and hard to get due to the waiting list

- Iphone 7 is an iphone, I don't support anti-consumerist companies

- LG G6 would be a great phone if the S8 didn't exist

 

Sorry for making this post this long, i'm just panicking now that i don't have a working phone.

Actually, android support for after launch flag stream phones from Samsung is something that they have said they will improve on. So there is no longer months upon months of waiting for updates that were available on the latest flagship phone. I pre-ordered the the Galaxy S8+ and I absolutely love this phone, the screen is phenomenal and makes this phone impossible not to love, battery life is good, I get easily 1.5-2 days of use out of it, its dust and water resistant, it comes with 64GB of storage but offers expandable memory. I think the regular S8 is a great option. Also, my brother is a die hard apple fan and has a 7 plus and covets my phone over his, everything about it to him is so much better and appealing.

That's exactly my idea, although Samsung 1) has made those claims in the past and 2) i'm not so worried about the timing of updates more so than how many updates it will get in it's lifetime. That's what i think Samsung needs to work on.

I don't disagree, but even my GS6 has been getting updates fairly regularly and runs very well as I still use it for work.

What version of android is it on?

I'd have to check but its not Android 7 Nougat, and I know Nougat is available on the S7.

That's what i'm worried about, i'm pretty sure it launched with Lollipop so to see it only running marshmallow is concerning. Unless it's on your company's domain, in that case it makes perfect sense.

It's most likely the latest version of Marshmellow, yes. However, I know that the day after the S8 and S8+ were released the Nougat update was available on the S7.

Forgot to mention i'd prefer something directly from Tmobile (it'll be cheaper) I'm not bias against oneplus, although i don't have any experience with their hardware not have i seen anyone owning one.

I started way back when with the DROID Incredible and have tried many different phones in between. I just switched from my Nexus 6P to the LG G6. After taking a break from LG when they came out with the G5 I have very pleased with the G6. I tried out both the S8 and G6 before making a decision.

A capitalist company being greedy is certainly not new. Its their job to make money, I respect them for taking a gamble that was removing the headphone jack. It worked out for them in the end.

they blamed it on being "wireless" future, they didn't even include wireless charging.

yup, the 7 and the 7plus sold less than usual iPhone sales. i must admit  7plus is a good phone but not the "best" phone in the market in my opinion, the headphone jack is an easy thing to put in same with wireless charging, the galaxy s7 managed to do it.

And you are right about the wireless charging. However Apple is making the iPhone 8 right now, and all rumors point to the iPhone 8 having wireless charging. 

 

It's in Apples best interest to save all of those "cool" and "hip" features for the 10th anniversary iPhone. Its hard to make the 10th iPhone amazing If Apple put all the "cool stuff" in the 7.

 

Its all marketing strategy. Then 7 really was just a floater iPhone to keep Apple in the game until the 8.

My contract is up in a year and I'll be replacing my 6s Plus with the 8 regardless of what the phone actually has. Unless there is no camera, haptic feedback on the on screen home button, or TouchID.

Name one thing apple does that's Pro-consumer

they don't:

- Sell OEM parts

- Have an Universally accepted IO

- Sell hardware at a reasonable price to performance ratio

- Blame poor cellular reception on people not holding the phone right (Iphone 4) 

- allow 3rd party apps to be installed without being signed 

- Allow custom rom's 

- updates slow down devices as they get older

- sell phones with higher resolutions than 1920x1080p

I don't see why you're defending the pitiful anti-consumerism from apple. "Who cares about not having a headphone jack" God forbid you want to watch something on your phone in public while charging it. or you're eating lunch at school and don't want to kill off your battery. Using a dongle is just another unnecessary thing i'd have to buy. 

I cannot name a single positive encounter i have ever had with an apple product, they're so cheap it's sad.

You can buy them online, not from Apple but from 3rd parties. Apple has 0 obligation to sell replacement parts. Name one computer or smartphone OEM that does.

Apps on the App Store are infact 3rd party, and you can sign your own apps using apps like impactor.

Look, I'm sorry you think Apple is anti-consumer. If they were Apple would not be doing so well. Most of your issues are created and are easily fixable.

You have two options here, bluetooth or a lighting/audio splitter that can be picked up for like $10
