Acer hits the ball out of the park with the Z35P

acer_predator_z35p-678_678x452.jpg

Acer has hit another home run in the premium space with this EPYC (sorry, I had to) 35" 1440p ultrawide.

First up, specs:

Acer Predator Z35P Specifications
  Z35P bmiphz
UM.CZ1AA.P01
Panel 35" AMVA+
Native Resolution 3440 × 1440
Maximum Refresh Rate 100 - 120 Hz
Response Time 4 ms GTG
Brightness 300 cd/m²
Contrast 2500:1
Viewing Angles 178°/178° horizontal/vertical
Curvature 1800R
Color Gamut 100% sRGB (?)
Dynamic Refresh Rate Tech NVIDIA G-Sync
Pixel Pitch 0.2382 mm × 0.242 mm (?)
Pixel Density 106 PPI
Inputs 1 × DP 1.2
1 × HDMI 1.4
Audio 3.5 mm input/output
2 × 9 W speakers
USB Hub 4 × USB 3.0 Type-A connectors
1 × USB 3.0 Type-B input
Power Consumption Idle: 0.5 W
Active: 65 W

So what do you get over your Predator X34? Well, you get another inch in the size department, a VA panel with 100%? of sRGB coverage, an extra 100 nits of brightness for a better contrast ratio, and a spare 20hz of refresh rate for a total of 120hz. Mental.

Well how much does this cost? Well you can have all of this for the small, yet significant, fee of $1099.99 USD. Or probably $2,499 NZD.

Would you buy one? Would you upgrade? Comment below.

Those "giant" Monsters look good on paper for me, but thinking having such a huge thing on my desk and gaming on it... I couldn't have the full screen in my active view and would miss a lot of what is going on around the active viewing place.

It for me just makes no sense, and now when you say, move farther away, I would rather stay at my desk with a smaller screen where I can have everything in view without eyerolling the display than moving farther away... and typing with outstretched arms gets ouchy very fast =P

The aspect ratio changes everything in that regard.  A 35" 4:3 would generally be a fairly disgusting (or flipping awesome) gaming monitor bowing the top of your desk under its mass.

After messing about with a small handful of 24" & 25" UW monitors, I'll not have them in my house.  No way I am going to sit at my desk with a pair of magnifying glasses strapped to my eye sockets just of the sake of having an UW monitor.  Even 27" UW, IMO, is barely adequate for general use b/c of its vertical limitation.  Using it for work feels like being in a room with a very low ceiling and ya just can't sprawl out.

29"+ Is finally where I can manipulate windows panes around and am comfortably able to cascade windows/docs and don't feel like the work flow is being hampered by the vertically challenged nature of UWs.

It's 2 4x3's side by side.

To be honest, I'd really like a 40 or a 45" 2k UW to get some more vertical, but I like the concept of an Ultrawide. I wouldn't go smaller than a 34" though if you're considering them.

No but seriously, I don't see the appeal of ultrawides.

For "productivity" isn't it better to just have two or more screens? A lot of programs are made to run in fullscreen mode on a wide screen monitor, so restricting it to a slightly taller 4:3 aspect ratio messes with the layout.

Compatibility in games are really hit-and-miss.

Most videos (although this depends on what type of video you watches) is 16:9 so you end up with black bars.

Images are usually square so you end up with less usable space for those too.

I just don't get the appeal.

Games that support it? Probably great experience with those.

Movies which uses a wider than 16:9 aspect ratio? Sure, go for it.

But both of those two scenarios are fairly rare compared to all the times it is worse.

You'd really need 3 screens to beat the UW on productivity as you don't have the bezels in the middle, particularly when you're working with gant charts, media plans, content timelines, etc.

The majority of movies are 21:9, TV series and content is usually 16:9.

About 80% of games properly support UW, another 10% support it but really just crop 16:9 and move the UI.

I don't really see how having the extra wide screen would help with that, and those are some really niche things compared to for example a word document, which benefits more from vertical space.

Besides, two monitors (or three) is far better for when you are using multiple programs, which is something a lot of people doing "productivity" things do.

TV series, and online videos.

I am not even sure if the majority of movies are 21:9. Maybe the majority of blockbuster movies, but there is a lot of 16:9 movies out there.

Oh I didn't know it was that widely supported. I feels like I hear people complain about a lack of UW support in games all the time.

I generally agree.  After playing around with the Asus 34" 1440p UW GSync panel for a few months, I found using it very clunky as opposed to 3 27" (16:9) 1440p screens.  It just didn't pan out as useful.  This for gaming as well as video editing, surfing, video watching, etc.

Most movies released in the cinemas today are either 2.35:1 or 2.39:1, which works out pretty damned close to 21:9.  So it is a good panel to watch theatrical releases on, assuming the conversion to digital, downloadable, or Blu-Ray/DVD retains that same aspect ratio.

Quote

Yeah, it's more a "thing" now.  Most of the AAA titles just work perfectly with 21:9.  But here's where the "opinion" comes in: I think it depends a lot on the style of game you're playing.  With First Person Shooters (the only thing I play), the UW is actually: a distraction more than a help.  Yes, you can see more to your sides.  But you're not really paying a lot of attention to those sections of the panel.  Your focus is usually dead center.  And your peripheral vision doesn't really help as much.

With Third Person perspective games, it's a lot different.  Here, having a UW screen probably does help quite a bit.  Specially with corner peeking, ledge peeking, etc.  Having that extra real estate on the screen will let you see further around your avatar than you could with a 16:9 display.

Ultimately I found it useless and sold it.  Back to 16:9.
