Just put duct tape over the black bars (effectively expanding the bezels and shrinking the aspect ratio), and then you don't need to worry about it.

They're using the same monitors to create the content, not consume it. Creating is where the real estate is valuable. @dezeltheintern probably has a lot to say on this -- especially regarding their workflow.

Also, following your own logic: you "should know better" than to use an "unusual" aspect ratio that most content creators don't output in if black bars bother you.

yaiks.......yeah, I don't like the black bars either. using 16:10 ratio screens so the bars get even taller. :/

Wait, I understand the bars on the right and left side, but top and bottom? why?

Edit: Okay, I got it, stupid question

Well... I guess that's what the x% of people using weird aspect ratios is getting at the moment. Everything has its price.

Try, fail, learn, repeat...

The top and bottom black bars are hardcoded, into the video, it's a 16:9 video with black bars overlayed on the top and bottom.

Yeah, I just mean that most people posting to youtube maek the vids in 16:9 because most people use those displays or phones for their youtube media consumption :)

Goddamn just deal with it. Everyone uses 16:9 aspect ratio. The majority at least.

The geek himself.

This isn't the first time, and wont be the last time. Amazon Movies does it. BBC iPlayer does it. Probably more do it...

To keep it constructive, it would be a competitive advantage if FPC would support encoding video in "as intended" aspect ratio without filler bars, so that it can properly scale for best fit on any aspect ratio monitor.

Yes, 16:9 is more common, so if they chose to render at that aspect ratio they should at least resize the recorded footage fill the full frame...

Otherwise it is literally a waste of screen space to EVERYONE.

The only parts of that video that are in full 16:9 are the screenshots of the benchmarks.

The black rectangle below is your typical 16:9 aspect ratio.  Red is 16:10, Green is 4:3, Blue is 21:9, Yellow is 2.76:1.  There is also 17:9 which I didn't include and it's just a bit wider than the width of the black rectangle, and other aspect ratios I omitted.  If you want to film something and make a video that can be reformatted to other aspect ratios, either by cropping, stretching, scaling in post production or let the video player do those things automatically then your only safe area to film is typically the area I shaded grey.  That means there's a lot of dead space that cannot contain any essential element that has to be in the video.  If anything important to the video lies in the dead space, unless watching the video on a screen with the same aspect ratio as the original production, formatting the video to be viewed with any other aspect ratio means important elements can be lost.

So get over it and suck it up, you're watching video on screens with less common aspect ratios.
