So I lost the Silicon Lottery, considering a delid .. need some advice.

It wouldn't my point was the 7700k will likely have all its cores loaded so its achieved score is not indicative of real life use case, the 1700 wouldn't be as highly utilised and therefore a whole core could do nothing but the Adobe application.

Application is single core intensive, would use all cores. Wat?

You've misunderstood.

Single core intensive doesn't matter if the core is already busy was my point. Say all of the 7700k's cores are between 25-50% utilised then it has at most 75% of 1 core devote to the single threaded application.

If the 1700 with double the cores and threads was under the same load then it is fair to say its cores would be between 0-25% meaning some cores are doing nothing and can devote 100% to the single threaded application

How on earth is that a win?

It preforms as well (after its already oc'd when the 1600 is not), it costs 1 third more and for that added price has 2 less cores. Bargain. Oh and its hot because Intel are cheap and gotta maximise that profit.

There is no IPC difference between the two lmao.. 7700k @ 4.5 = 6700k @ 4.5

Hey folks so I have had this i7700K for 3 weeks now. It has been running at stock for most of the time at around 67-69c (did a few experiments with overclocking) .. then managed to OC it to 4.8Ghz .... and boy does it get hot (high 80's-90's). At first I thought, maybe my AIO is bad at cooling the temps. So I took the CPU to a friend who has a water-cooled test bench. After a bit of testing he told me "You lost the lottery mate, de-lid that sucker".

So I have ordered liquid metal by Coollaboratory and the de-lidding tool. (£25 total, so not bad at all!)

After watching a lot of videos on the re-glue process and what glue to use here is my question:

If you have de-lided a CPU yourself;

  1. Have you re-glued the IHS? Or did you just use the fact that the CPU bracket will hold it in place, combined with the pressure from a cooling block.
  2. If you have glued it, what glue have you used and how long before you could pop the CPU back into the mobo for use

If you have done this, please let me know, not looking for "hear-say" advice because you watched a YouTube video :)

Thanks in advance!

Hey bud.  Sucks to see that your thread has derailed, but we'll try to get you back on track.

Free floating and resealing is completely up to you.  There is absolutely no difference in temperatures using either method.  I use to free float all of my IHSs, but now I take the extra step and reseal them.

As for what to use, I prefer a black silicone adhesive/sealant as it's in keeping with OEM.

This is the stuff I use and it's perfect:  Permatex Silicon Adhesive  Can be purchased at any auto parts store or Walmart.

If you'll take a good look prior to delidding, you'll notice that Intel left a small gap/break in the sealant along the top between the substrate and the IHS.  Make sure that you do the same in your application.  I only apply sealant down the sides and under the mounting wings myself.  I then place a small dot at the top and bottom centers leaving 2 gaps at the top and 2 gaps at the bottom.  This application has repeatedly proven very secure and safe.

**Make sure that you place a coat of clear finger nail polish on the gold contacts located on the substrate adjacent the die.  You're goal is to prevent any accidental contact with LM.  It will probably never happen as the LM stays in place very well, but you might as well do it while you're in there.  You can also use liquid electrical tape, which is something I've started doing recently.  Great stuff.  Gardner Bender Liquid Electrical Tape

Hopefully that helps.

There's nothing wrong with a 7700k for the workloads you intend to do.  Delid that sucker and enjoy it!

"way better" depending on which benchmarks you look at that's about £10-20 per percentage point. That's very expensive for a small difference (that in gaming for example won't show up until high refresh rate territory).

We are majorly derailing the thread here though xD In my 1st post mentioning Ryzen btw I did say that solely for gaming the 7700k is top dog.

In summary for OP

- You should have researched better to suit your needs

- You seem to be stuck with a low-ish end 7700k

- You might squeeze 0.1-0.2GHz but please be aware that even with a tool its dangerous for not much gain (apart from temps they should get better)

If I was on my home PC I could show you utilisation but I'm not sorry. Do what you can with google or remind me in a few hours. I don't monitor it too closely but when I have looked I've never loaded every core (unless it was a heavily multi threaded application)

Fantastic, the clear nail polish tip is genius. I was wondering about that and the LM as it's conductive.

Many thanks, for the black silicone tip. Looks like Amazon stocks it. https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Adhesives-Sealers/Permatex-3-Oz-Black-Silicone-Sealant-81158/B000AL6WLA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1495545674&sr=8-1&keywords=permatex+silicone+adhesive
