Thermal Paste or no

Alright, so I bought myself a i5 6500 with a stock cooler, works fine right now but I plan on taking it off for like 1 hour to do a demostration for my class. Now I just got this cpu and cooler 2 weeks ago but haven't turned on the system itself for about 1 week. Right now it is Monday, May 22 and I installed it on Friday, May 19. I've been running games on it throughout the entire weekend. These games are like GTA 5, PUBG, and etc. Now Im wondering if I need to replace thermal paste once I reinstall the system or if I should be fine.

Current Build:

If your temps are fine afterwards, then no. The paste on those stock coolers seems to stay congealed on the base pretty well.

I've gotten halfway through replacing a CPU, gone off and forgotten about it for a day, and come back to finish the job and the cooler was still doing fine.

If you're planning on removing the CPU I would definitely put clean paste on afterwards.

I would replace the thermal paste, when I removed a stock intel cooler for an 1150 the paste was completely dry and I would never put it down again with the same stuff applied.

I put my CPU on a new mobo and didn't replace the paste (stock cooler). Although that was a fast transplant, I'm not sure if the paste in your case will dry or not

That's an F in the profile pic

replace it, the aplication gets ruined once you remove the cooler once. its going to work if you dont but i would recomend replaceing it to keep your temperatures low

Alright, so I bought my Thermal Paste but now I need a way to remove it... I need a way to remove it with a rag or something that you would find in your house. No liquids please. Water is fine. If liquid is required, something small please.

Is a paper towel by itself fine? I might be able to get my hands on some coffee filters though

As long as you get the thermal paste off it's fine.

i tend to use medical grade gassoline and paper towels, works great but make sure to have decent ventilation so you dont get high on the fumes. if you cant get gassoline, isopropyl alcohol or windex then Linus recently made a video about just this:

In the video linked above Linus shows that Coffee filter is best non-liquid method while paper towel being close second. Have several pieces at hand, you want to change it few times. I've always used only paper towels. Its bit icky and takes more time, but works just as good.

Isnt the termal paste on the stock coolers supposed to be pretty poor quality anyway?

Better invest in a good paste and replace it.

I don't think there's such a thing as medical grade gasoline. Gasoline is not used for anything medically related. It's a combustible, refined, fossil fuel. I also wouldn't be using gasoline to clean computer parts anyway. It's not electrically safe and residue on parts that get 70c+ isn't a good thing anyway.

The easiest, walk to the store and be set method, is 70% or 99% isopropyl alcohol with paper towel and the coffee filter is to check for paste residue (if you care about it being that clean, which you should).
The best way, but you'll have to order it, is the ArctiClean Surface Cleaner and Purifier solution which is a purpose built product. I've used it and can attest to preferring it over 99% isopropyl. You can order it on Amazon for $8.11 (before tax) and if you have Prime, get it tomorrow with an order of $35 or more. Pick up some good thermal paste with it, I use Gelid GC-Extreme which costs $12.99 and would also add to that "$35 or more for next day shipping" ordeal.

says medical grade gassoline on the bottle and i apply it to whatever i am whileping with under good ventilation. i cant say i see this as a hazzard tbh. all alcohol is also flamable but isnt dangerrous for the same reason, it avaporates quiclky

Alcohol is flammable yes, but doesn't have anything else in the contents of it that would leave residue like gasoline would.

Also, a picture of that bottle would be appreciated because a quick google search didn't turn up anything regarding medical grade gasoline.

TIL that the Swedish sell gasoline in glass containers. Or they call isopropyl gasoline. I don't know. I mean, you guys are one of the happiest countries on Earth so I won't question that with cold hard proof like this.

its high grade stuff that is safe for the skin and evaporates quickly, but also leaves fumes like hell that give you a huge headace if you breath them too much. forgot to open my window when takeing apart a GPU today, bad idea. also we used to keep anything medical related in brown glass bottles or jars and still do to some extent :P you can probably get most things in one of them if you want
