I know you said you didnt want 4k but I added it just encase. These two acer monitors 1080p 144hz for 390.00 usd and a 27 inch 1440p 144hz for 600.00. Either would serve you well and dont have any of the issues I had with the asus 27inch 1440p 144hz monitor.

Thank you for all your help, I just bought the monitor i was thinking about getting. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/CwgPxr/dell-s2417dg-238-165hz-monitor-s2417dg

I am currently running a gtx 1070, i5 4690k over clocked to 4ghz, 8 gb of ram, 500gb SSD, 2 TB HDD, peripherals: Logitech 710+, deathadder chroma, Corsair void wireless, and monitor is 60hz 1920x1080p monitor with 1 Ms response time, the monitor I'm considering upgrading to is https://pcpartpicker.com/product/CwgPxr/dell-s2417dg-238-165hz-monitor-s2417dg

I'm heading to college this fall so I'm wondering if this is worth the investment.

I mean, yeah that's a pretty nice monitor, but you don't have to "upgrade" to it, if your current one works then why not use both? Two monitors is always nice. Go for it, but keep your old one with you, two is better than one.

Id say why not. Higher resolution and refreshrate. If you place shooters it will feel alot smoother. Also looking at best buy, their price history goes crazy...

If you don't have much time to spend on using it, I suggest holding off the purchase until you do.

By that time you might be looking at other newer, better monitors or have a different budget.

It's a hobby of mine , but at the same time... College isn't cheap

No point youll never be able to push 100fps with max settings in 1440p with a 1070 in triple A games. Your better off just buying a 1080p 144hz monitor instead. or getting a 1080/1080ti with that monitor.

Go for it. Or even better, throw it on as a second monitor.

Or a 1440p 60hz monitor...
Dell Ultrasharp U2515Hx is fantastic by the way, only $280, and it's 25" 1440p IPS with a very nice finish that isn't glossy but isn't quite matte either, and the color is fantastic.

I would like to go up on refresh rate though, and if 1440p is too much for 1070 I. Future I can still play at 1080p

Its not too much depending on the game like BF1. However there are far more games it cant run at or above 100fps at 1440p then at 1080p and some games where it cant get a locked 60 in 1080p with max settings. I would suggest just getting a 1080p 144hz monitor with or without gsync. Or get the 1440p 144hz monitor with plans to upgrade sometime in the future. I have tried in my time of buying and selling and buying and returning monitors that for 1440p 1080 is the gpu to get and for 1080p the 1070 is good for that at max settings but at max settings it starts to strain at 1440p and sometimes even in 108-p. Depending on the games you play of course, though if you play the new games that came out recently and the games usually come out every holiday season itll start to show its strain even more.

Then I'd say go ahead and go for the monitor you initially were looking at, that way once you get a better gpu or another 1070 you'll be able to fully utilize it.

from someone that has had vareous display setups straight out of hell:

attaching factual value to upgrading monitors is really difficult, its kind of like upgrading your mouse or keyboard, as long as they work there's not much spec sheet sided stuff that'll decide worth, but you may view it differently due to experiences with your current setup.

that said, that's one hell of a pricy monitor, but it'll gsync up and down trough a pretty large range from what i can find, so if your game cant make it up to 165fps, that's not really an issue. and seeing its slapping together 1440p, stupid high refresh rate, and gsync it's not *that* steep if you like to have all of those features.

and something else i have to mention: dell monitor stands are freaking godlike, in hindsight i'd gladly pay €100 more for a pair of dell monitors than i did for my pair of benq monitors just for having those amazing stands.

Bullshit. Why buy worse resolution for the next decade just because such a stupid reason?

The Monitor might stay for 5-10 years, the GPU will be replaced in 2-3 years. Think about the future. Why would you disadvantage yourself in 100% of the Time, just to have a few more fps?

And so what, if the GTX 1070 won't hit 100 fps with max settings? Then.. how about.. don't use max settings? Are Max settings the only settings that are useable? Go down to High or even Medium. Where is the problem? Of course, if someone isn't smart enough to actually USE the graphic settings.... Developers didn't put Graphic settings in there for pure decoration... They are meant to be used. USE Them. I even used 1440p / 165 Hz with a GTX 1060 for a while. Zero problems, everything was smooth. Why? because i know how graphic settings work ;) If i had bought a GTX 1070 last year, i wouldn't have upgraded to a 1080, i would still use the 1070 without any problems.

1440p @ High > 1080p @ Ultra. Easy. Similar fps, better image quality

And what about all those games, that aren't super hardcore AAA titles, like Overwatch? Or older titles like Bioshock.

And you seem to forget, thanks to G-Sync, you don't need 144 fps to benefit from it. Even without, already 70-90 fps are plenty to benefit over a 60 Hz Monitor.

So no. He is NOT better off buying 1080p. He is 100 point zero percent better off buying 1440. regardless of the GPU he has NOW. GPU can and will be replaced quickly.

I say: Fuck 1080p. We have 2017, and you can spend more than 250 bucks for a cheap as possible monitor. If you have 400-500 bucks for a GTX 1070 that only lasts for 3-4 years max, and only benefits you during Gameplay...

Then you also have 400-500 bucks for a monitor, that will last 5-10 years, and benefits you 100% of the time.

Dell S2417dg  /  Acer Predator XB241YU.

24", 1440p, 144 Hz with OC to 165 possible, very decent colors, G-Sync (which is a HUGE advantage. Doesnt matter how much fps you have, you will have it smooth.)

Right now: Dell S2417dg, insta buy that. 399 USD is a really great Price for it and those specs. That's cheap enough to make every 1080p G-Sync monitor completely obsolete/uninteresting.

That dell monitor is like...the second cheapest g-sync monitor on the market right now, of course OP could save $20 and get the cheaper 1080p g-sync monitor, but it makes no real sense to do so. You're right though at maxed settings the 1070 will struggle at 1440p, but the nice thing about g-sync is it works down to 30 fps and up to whatever the monitor will manage, and as mentioned if some graphical settings have to be turned down it'll still look fine

Wasnt speaking about the money aspect of things just performance. Later on I posted either get the 1080p 144hz and keep the 1070 but if you plan on upgrading later get the 1440p 144hz monitor instead.

still doesn't make a lot of sense to spend about as much money for a 1080p monitor when the 1070 can deliver playable fps in 95% of games at maxed out graphics, just turn down a few settings in those other 5% and it still looks good and get good fps

It does if he is trying to go fro 144hz as he said in this thread. Simply put if he was going for 60hz it wouldnt make sense to buy a 1080p over the 1440p his goals was high refresh and to see any benefit you need a gpu that can actually push it and the fact remains the 1070 struggles with triple A games at that resolution and in a decent number of games cant even produce a locked 60fps. Hence why I said go down in res to achieve the higher frame rate he wanted or just buy the 1440p monitor and upgrade his gpu later down the road. Price isnt the issue for me as much as it is providing sound advice for the goals he has in mind. How much he spends or what he spends based on it is up to him.

This monitor has scan lines from a lot of people but so did the asus pg248Q 1080p 144hz gsync monitor. Out of the dell and asus the acer 24in 1080p 144hz monitor doesnt suffer from this as it runs native 144hz as opposed to a OC'd 144hz like the asus and the dell.

Edit: Aside from that the asus and the acer 24inch monitors and with the acer 1440p monitors you have a greater access to changing gamma settings to achieve better blacks in game through the monitors OSD without having to adjust gamma in nvidia or amd control panels.
