Need a good server tech

Hey all sorry if this is In the wrong topic 

 

I need help with setting up a web page and adding a ftp where me and my wife can access documents where I can login and she can to upload and download while we are not at home. I have a domain and use fastmail to handle it but scratching my balls trying to see where I start  if anyone can help would really appreciate it

Iv been using a mix of Jessie and debain but insure as of yet

its probably a web host that uses a cpannel interface or something (rip me)

Yes rip you. Try to deploy FTP service without knowing OS. I am expertised in unRAID, FreeNAS, Windows Server & Ubuntu Server

Using my doiman to load up a web page but want to use it like a portal to access a server with like a login

Thanks it's a really hard to get around as had someone to set me one up years ago but server died. And now days people charge something stupid like  £1000 to do it in the UK now ?

I'd highly advise against FTP if you are not experienced with it. Use a VPN instead, that is the more versatile solution anyway.

And as of neading a tech: large parts of what I posted in my unraid guide applies to many straight linux distris as well...

Which OS?

How do you want your FTP set up?

 

In the end just don't setup FTP... it is pretty dangerous and adds lots of vulnerabilities... I looked into it about a year ago for myself and it just isn't worth it... Using OpenVPN just adds 2 clicks to get to your NAS and is most likely way more secure

Yea I know what you mean just looking at fourm after fourm and my side is hardware and when it comes to Linux.. well still lots to learn . It's just so me and my wife can access my new server from anywhere as of os for it been trying different ones and they all come with pros and cons and I'm no where near smart enough to do this and my domain is just used for emails for now but things have changed the last 8 years so lost with it all

1 server at home (undecided on OS)

I have a domain I own 

I have a fast mail web server 

And I need something where I can do important documents where we can access it from home and at work.

If you are willing to drop 50$ I'd advise you to check you my unraid guide, I explain everything you need in there in great detail. And as of the VPN vs FTP: for that use case the VPN is the better choice,, trust me.

well a vpn isn't a replacement for ftp at all.

look at something like wordpress or squarspace or anouther premade solution. id stay away from doing it diy if you don't know what your doing. thats how you get big security flaws and a webpage thats a pain to manage.

kinda: every NAS has SMB and NFS built in, with a VPN you get into the local network, so you can access the SMB and NFS shares without forwarding the ports or building adding an FTP server. So if all you want is to get access to your files when you aren't at home a VPN is a suitable replacement for an FTP server

well kinda... If your website is very simple (mine is just a few simple pages, each with a slideshow of images) you can easily get away with creating it with software like muse, putting it onto an apache server and leaving it alone.

So why exactly does the server need to be hosted at home? There are plenty of free and cheap services online that offer exactly what you're looking for that have much faster networks and better redundancy than you can offer at home. Just curious before you go through all of the trouble of setting something up only to find it useless the first time you need a file and your server/power/network is down.

but nfs or smb still isn't a great idea over a vpn due to the latency. sftp is a much better option here.

it is good enough

The upload of a home network connection is the major bottleneck anyway and I never had issues with corrupt files

problem is with nfs and cifs is they like to send lots of packts to each other, while ftp just sends one stream. when you add the latency up, ftp is much faster on a wan or high ping network. 

 

but really, just get something like wordpress on there and be lazy.

ok, with that I can agree

And really self hosting is fun and a nice exercise, but not as good a solution as just using something premade

 

With the first point; yeah, you get a bit ore performance, but when I VPN into my other network and transfer a file, I get roughly half of what the upload offers... And for a few photos and documents that is good enough. But yeah, I bet ftp would work much better!
