So I got a call from my ISP a few days ago...

But unlike most Americans we actually have competition from several providers so they called to let me know they doubled my speeds for good for no extra charges because well competition now has 50mbps on the same price tier I am so they wanted to preempt me from changing since I'm not under contract:

 

 

So before you #BuildTheWall, you might want to try our ISPs. Food's also great you might like it here.

I'm sad._. but good to know that mexico now has a better internet connection than the U.S. (at least better than my area)

 

When I started using AT&T few years ago, they offered me 6Mbps Down / 768Kbps Up, but few months ago because the network was so unstable, they recommended me to downgrade my network to at most 3Mbps/384Kbps

 

 Now when I check availability for my address, it seems they want me to use 1.5Mbps now...

 

May be I should look into Sonic or Comcast

That basically tells me they have 3 times as many people but cannot be arsed to actually have more bandwidth for the same area and yes it's bound to get worst. Note that my test do say I'm faster than 89% of Mexico however that's because most rural areas get DSL if they're lucky but often nothing but basic GSM cellphone access, if that. Most cities however you can get a comparable fiber or cable to mine.

I have 100/100 (symmetric!) and can get 2 Gigabit where I live. In the US, the problem isn't everywhere. It's worse in different areas where there are monopolies

That's one interesting thing: you guys seem to be a lot more fond of rural areas for some reason: Our coverage is mostly shit on the country too but people on those areas don't really expect to have decent internet yet people in sorta remote suburbs or out in the sticks do expect great coverage there for some reason.

200/20 is the top tier here but it is close to 100 bucks yet for this plan I pay 40 bucks for the package deal (phone, tv and internet)

If you live 15 minutes south of me your only option is DSL that's so bad pages time out due to a ping rate of over 1000. =( 

I'd like to move to the sticks otherwise.

Most places in the US have multiple ISPs available to them, but people can't be bothered with actually looking anything up, just go with the one that advertises on TV. Or there's a reputation that there's only one good choice, the rest are shit or cost an arm and a leg.

 

Hell, most places Comcast operates in, either Time Warner or CenturyLink do as well. Hughesnet, or an analogous sister company operates in most of the US, specializing in rural internet access but can still be used for urban/suburban. There's dozens of smaller ISPs that service most of these areas too. The problem is, most consumers are stupid.

When my desktop is the only one online, the best speed test results pegs me as 25 down, 2 up. Any time I run Steam and watch a youtube video, with multiple other machines online, I'm pulling speeds around 66 down and 5up on just my system.

Needless to say, I don't really trust online speed tests.

My speed test correlates to what I get with Steam, which is about 3.3MB/s for download.

In a lot of places near me, some ISPs are better than others. The CenturyLink lines in my neighborhood are bad, and everyone complains about them.

Hughesnet cannot replace even DSL. Their speeds are better but their service is useless for residential use: data caps so low I'll go faster than most decent cellphone data plans.

well... in SoCal Charter upgraded us from 30 to 60 a few years ago free of charge and most recently from 60 to "at least" 100 free of charge.... aka it's usually around 130 to 150.

i get 150/15 for about $85 bucks a month.  The pricing where i live is very weird.  One company, Cox, has a monopoly in the city i live in, but Verizon offers Fios in the adjacent cities.  so we get shafted on price but not as much as it could be.
