Build your own LTE Network - Soon-ish

A consortium of industry giants have gotten together and hammered out an LTE-like network that uses unlicensed wifi spectrums. Right now it focuses on the 5Ghz frequency range and will allow the building of an LTE-like network using wireless access points. The current spec is targeted more for industrial IoT, airports, and shipping ports. The current 1.0 spec is still under review but the alliance is already working on revision 1.1 which will include enhancements to coverage and additional bands in the 2.4GHz space.

The alliance didn't try to do too much with the 1.0 spec; it simply wanted to get it out the door so partners and manufacturers could begin adoption. For 1.0, the alliance focused on the 5-GHz band. More functionality and more spectrums will be supported in future specs.

Although MulteFire uses the 4G network, it does not use cell towers like the ones used by the wireless carriers. Like Wi-Fi, it is deployed using access points. The only difference is MulteFire broadcasts an LTE signal instead of Wi-Fi. However, the access points will have twice the range as a Wi-Fi access point, according to Chmaytelli, which means a lot fewer access points are needed for coverage.

There's no need to go through government agencies such as the FCC.

 

Not only could this provide some interesting competition and build-outs in the near future, it might also make for some interesting LTT videos too ;)

From what I understand it has to do with the power applied to the signal which impacts range a lot. You're limited a lot by how much power your 5GHz band can broadcast at. Go into the unlicensed spectrum and you can apply more power to broadcast the same signal much farther.

Doesn't ubiquiti manufacture access points that can go up to like 1km in range? Don't they also operate on the 5ghz spectrum?

I wonder why not use 5G directly at this point, in theory it's even more suitable for a high number of (relatively) short range hotspots.

Reduce the datarate and use more bandwith and you get much more range.

 

Also 2x the range is not as difficult for wireless systems compared to wired once.

 

Edit: on my 2.4 GHz WLAN I get a range up to 1.75 km. Only in good conditions and only with my laptop and not with the phone, but it's possible.

how is this in any way more secure if it goes over an unlicensed open spectrum? governments now already need to do one hell of a job monitoring illegal broadcasting, that will be next to impossible on those frequency's.

Sure, but they should be more resistant to it than current wifi solutions. LTE was designed to service hundreds of cuncurrent users, it can handle a few handfuls of IoT devices (especially with multiple hotspots).

Yes, LTE is a highly managed system and can handle a lot of devices. It makes to ho spot more complicated, but i's worth it.

Good conitions like:

- line of sight

- AP 20 meter over the ground

- High gain of the laptop antenna (the phone wasen't even detecting the net)

- Almost no other network in this area

- I assume positive interference, but I can't measure this.

 

Also it was very slow.

You can do that now. It's going to be pretty expensive but you can segment off your own version of an internet today. Just need some MPLS backhauls and circuits that terminate in your own data center and then it's all set :)

Isn't range of wifi much more greatly affected by the client devices, not the base station?  Having 1000W of power at your base station doesn't mean much when your devices only have mW of power.  I can see this being better for open areas I guess, but I would assume it will still have the same problem other 5GHz signals have with penetration.

Well as far as I understand it the AP would be broadcasting essentially LTE signals but on the 5GHz which phones would probably have to support or they could pick it up as LTE and transmit back on the 5GHz band. I do see the penetration problem being an issue, like it is now in a lot of places targeted by this for current 4G technology.
