How bad is it going to be?

crazydog2580

So my gf really wants an iMac for Xmas and I’m going to buy it for her.. I was wondering what are they like at gaming? Should be ok mid to high Settings? If I’m going to buy it I might as well get some use out of it.

Yes I know there not cheap and I could build something much better and blah blah it’s more about the look for her then the performance.

If you're buying it for her, then I suggest building it. Don't waste your money on something like that. You can build a very nice looking machine at a better price.

If she's buying it herself then it's fine in my opinion.

Make a hackintosh and save 1000-1500$

don't even go to the lengths of that, all she wants is pretty outside, so just get her a decent build for $500 and put elementary OS on it, bam it has a nice looking OS and if you use an define R4 no window you are set

Build a decent system with a sleek looking m-atx case with a nice 27" 1440p display. And use windows because you would probably end up bootcamping a iMac to play some games.

I love how everyone has decided to tell him otherwise despite his post saying he's going to buy it.

@crazydog2580 have a youtube search of 27 iMac 780M and you will see a few gaming videos posted maybe you can glean some info from that.

To be honest if you want to game on the machine I'd suggest potentially dual booting Windows, but on those games that are Mac friendly it won't be too bad, perhaps I'd drop the res to 1080p when playing to boost the frames up. It's expensive yes, but there is some decent hardware inside of it none the less.

If you really want to game properly though, buy the lady her iMac, and build yourself a windows system for gaming!

If it's "looks" you care about there's PLENTY of mini itx cases that would do you just fine. I know what you said but you should talk to your gf about it, because 3000 for that imac is the biggest ripoff ive ever seen.

I wouldn't do it, I'd be explaining to my girlfriend every reason not to get one of these, People get easily led into believing Apple products are the be all and end all and it's very narrow minded, Just because you may have the money doesn't mean it should be stupidly spent, 'A fool and his money are easily parted'. And as posted above a custom pc you could build her would be waaay better or even a laptop/ultra book, Spending $3.3k AUS on a desktop for your girlfriend which won't be used nearly half as much as it should do is daft

A huge waste of money. Unless you dont care about that money and you have way too much money to waste dont get it. Build a PC with a nice looking case(I can bet you your GF will find a cool one for her there all kinds of cases) and add a nice stylish monitor and you should be set. For MUCH less.

I wouldn't listen to these guys, just go ahead and buy it. Honestly Its not that bad [for gaming], as per notebookcheck's 780m review, and the hardware is always very nice. If it will make her happy, and you are okay with spending that much money its ok, really. I don't think you will be able to find an All-in-one with that spec combo and that nice hardware and screen. For the longest time, I've been anti-apple but recently i've thought about it, and it isn't that bad. The quality of their things is always really good.

BTW and just to avoid debates, i'm not a fanboy and don't own any apple products. I even have a surface pro so yea.

thanks for all the suggestions but she is just not interested in a pc build she just wants a clean simple machine. we have looked at a ton of other all-in-one set ups. i have told her there a rip but she still wants one so what can ya do. give her what she wants then i can have the same budget for my self. I intend on building a pc probably early in the new year

It's not bad in general, but it's terrible in price to performance.

Alienware would be a better deal than this.

Or Origin PC.
