what solder should i get for my soldering iron?

i have a soldering pen and i have been trying to solder on cicuit boards but my main problem is the solder i have right now is very high gage and i have to turn my soldering iron onto its max temperature to melt it and then its too wide for the circuit board. is there any thin solder that would be appropriate for this application that you would recommend? thanks!

To be honest, most solder is at least decent (just don't completely cheap out on it). Go for a diameter/gauge you think is appropriate for what you're doing. If it's very fine PCB work, you may want to consider a large reel of very thin solder (and a narrow tip for the iron).

solder with lead is easier to melt. also try cutting the solder in smaller bits instead of feeding it from the roll, then your soldering iron has less metal to dissipate heat into. what wattage is the soldering iron you have?

I recommend lead solder, unlike the common myth that lead is poison to touch, I can assure you that unless your planning to eat it, you should be fine.

ok thanks. its a 5-40 watt soldering iron. i can change the temp

so just dont lick your solder xDxD i hear lead is great for your body though xDxD

yea 40 watt is pretty low, that requires a lot of patience :P, my 30 watt iron has to heat for like 20 minutes and then heat a component for another 5 minutes or so before i can think about applying solder.

yea don't put it in your mouth, and make sure you don't breathe in the smoke. a small fan should be enough to blow it away. also ventilate with the outside, preferably just solder outside :P. the lead isn't really dangerous unless you solder a lot (industrial amounts)

I use 1mm 60/40 rosin core with my 60W iron, it works well in most situations except for soldering ICs.

yea don't put it in your mouth, and make sure you don't breathe in the smoke. a small fan should be enough to blow it away. also ventilate with the outside, preferably just solder outside :P. the lead isn't really dangerous unless you solder a lot (industrial amounts)

i have a small fan just because the vapors make me cough but i also solder next to 2 windows in a corner, so i can open them up and ventilate the area very well.

Unless you are using 100% tin solder (it's usually 40% lead), that's not the problem.  It's the soldering iron.  Really nice ones are expensive, but you can get something decent without spending much.  This is what I have, and it's not bad.  You'll need to buy some bits though, since it only comes with one.

the vapors in general are really not good for you, they can give you metal poisoning.

Actually, there isn't any lead in the fumes given off so you wouldn't get lead poisoning, you still shouldn't inhale it though since it's basically secondhand smoke.

The smoke is the flux in the centre of the solder, not good to breathe. As for what solder, pretty much anything lead based will work well. Lead free is a pain to work with. It looks like you'd benefit from a new iron, it should only take a minute to heat up and shouldn't have any trouble with lead free of pretty much any gauge.

You're right, by the time I've put on the mask, you've had a chance to inhale smoke from flux three times xD

 

Edit: I should point out one reason the iron I linked will heat up faster is because the bits surround the part that heats up.  Cheap soldering irons just make  contact with the bits at the end, but nicer ones use hollow bits so heat is transferred faster.  So even if you go for another iron, at least look for one that uses hollow bits.

short version:

 

Get 63/37 ideally, if you want cheaper and a very tiny bit easier to work with but not as great as 63/37, get 60/40 ... 

Get 0.56mm or 0.5mm  , if it's too expensive or hard to get, go up to 0.7mm ... don't buy thicker, if you need a lot of solder at a time you can always cut a piece of solder and bend it in two to feed solder faster. I like 0.56mm , thinner is better for surface mount soldering (tiny 0603 resistors or smaller) but you can work even those with 0.5mm 

 

Get something with ~ 2% flux , stay away from water soluble or organic fluxes (these two types are bad). I recommend Multicore, Henkel , Stannol, Alpha Metals ..

The smoke from flux makes my lungs hurt if I don't wear a mask.  But I've got some weak-ass lungs.  When I work on a computer from a heavy smoker, breathing will hurt for days afterwards.

Read that post, the "no need to worry about it" is about having lead in solder. Some fluxes can be bad for your health and your lungs especially, and I explain that in that long post.

This is my preferred brand and gauge for pcb work. Works great for through hole and surface mount. Ive even soldered smd ic's with it with amazing results, but i would recommend using flux along with it in that application.
