productivity I like Linux so much, but i feel less productive !

In Windows its boring but there so much facility like photo manipulation, vectoring, audio creation. word maker

 

in Linux its impossible, gimp, inkscape is so hard to use. it look obsolete.

 

i was  trying to use virtualbox but the performance is so bad because i only use i3-5005u.

 

so, how to make the use of Linux more productive? to do more than browsing n watching movie ??

Just find apps that suit your wants and needs. There's plenty out there, you don't just have to have them from the ubuntu repository either. Just google the app you want and see if it has a linux version, if it doesn't then google something like "linux app for photo manipulation" for instance.

for lower performance apps like photo manipulation and word processing, have you considered WINE?  A friend runs microsoft's visualstudio tools using WINE on a Celeron netbook just fine, so performance shouldn't be an issue.

gimp is also available on windows and exactly the same to use. i use it occasionaly but i think it's overkill on the feature side and thus too complicated for fast everyday image editing.

 

i prefer paint.net on windows for picture manipulation and there is pinta for linux wich is about as good. 

 

less features than gimp and thus easier to use but enough features to be useful.

 

for video editing i use shotcut. also available on windows and osx. 

 

when looking for software i always look for three things (in that particular order)

 

is it free?

 

is it multiplatform? (windows, linux, osx ?) (this is important, i consider wine or a virtual machine a last resort) 

 

is it easy to use?

Look into Wine, but you will probably not have much success with the office suite. I think that if you want to be productive on Linux you have to be doing programming. Otherwise, companies that make the big photo/video editing software, word processing, etc. are mainly targeting Windows and Mac users (for obvious reasons), so if this is what you do, I am sad to say that you will probably have to do your work in Windows or Mac  But after you are done working, you can go back to Linux and have fun. 

 

PS: Give LibreOffice a try, it is supposed to be a replacement for the missing office suite.

libre has a good word processor, has a nice powerpoint replacement, but its spreadsheet is simply inferior to excel.

that is my problem ... i'm more into design and layout things. instead of code ..

I'm not sure what the problem with GIMP and Inkscape are. I started with those, so maybe it's just a matter of you not being used to them. For audio, you can use Ardour or Bitwig Studio. For video, you can use Kdenlive (best completely free video editor) or DaVinci Resolve (free for non-profit & hobbyists). LibreOffice is fine for writing documents.

 

If you don't like the looks of the programs you're using, try KDE. It's a desktop environment for Linux and the theming is pretty good.

Krita is a Japanese freeware that should have a Linux version. 

 

Blender 3D is a design tool for 3D modelling & animation. It has video editing capabilities but is severely unconventional. 

 

I cannot recall any further photo manipulation nor design programs ATM, perhaps if you stated what kind of design you do it may help in our assisting in finding you alternatives that could be easier. 

 

I found GIMP similar to Photoshop but quirky. Though it should be known I didn't do super deep photo editing on GIMP as I have with photoshop. (No scripting, hue and saturation adjustment, no selecting by color as I tried with photoshop; I would expect a few googles to bring you up to speed though if you just don't understand gimp. Maybe just take a quick break and come back to it.)

Not sure if this is what you want for photo manipulation, but I know of a open source equivalent of lightroom called darktable. Darktable is really meant for people doing photography based editing.

WPS office is what I use, it looks more like word and runs on windows Linux and I believe mac

 

you can run photo shop cs6 in wine without any problems.

I don't know how you got the idea that it's Japanese software unless you thought that because of the anime-looking squirrel mascot. It's an open source KDE project and it was started by a German. Every Krita code sprint took place in the Netherlands.

Maybe I saw it in a list that had another Japanese program. Something started in Japan and then got a later English translation that used to be paid only

Can you elaborate on how it is inferior? I'm just curious, not using Excel that much these days, except for some very minor tasks I've found a spreadsheet useful for at work.

excel's poweruser features are simply more refined, which is kinda to be expected if applying common sense.

 

excel has had a HUGE budget behind it, for a HUGE dev team, and has been used by a HUGE audience of power users willing to pay this cash for a good product.

 

libreoffice is a fork off openoffice which are both funded by good will.

 

libre's scripting engine is also WAY less powerful than excel, which has had a lot of refinement, and runs closer to bare metal than libre's which is essentially just some mess slapped onto java.

As for looking obsolete, I disagree, but that's a different topic entirely.

 

Photo editing and video editing on Linux has come a long way in recent years. Keep in mind here that getting functionality comes first over ease of use a lot of the time in the Linux world. While it's not as bad as ten years ago, there are still a lot of programs that work best once you get into the mindset. This goes for professional tools on Windows too, however, and is generally becoming more accepted as far as I can tell.

 

If you're looking for basic photo editing, I think GIMP is overkill for sure. It's built as more of a powerhouse of photo editing features rather than something for quick edits. For those, I can recommend Shotwell. It handles more like iPhoto rather than Photoshop, and is targeted more at people who don't want to spend all day learning that one program.

 

I can echo the positive sentiment around LibreOffice, although I'm a little puzzled as to what makes Calc inferior to Excel, there have been many times where I have reached a specific feature quicker in Calc than Excel simply because despite more complicated control panels, the interface is easier to navigate. I've put people with no experience with Calc who have only used Excel behind it and they generally get things done a little quicker, with the same or better results. I've never used macros in LO or MSO, however, so I can't speak to which one is better.

 

Video editing is tricky. Some perform differently on different platforms, and it all depends on what you're looking for. I'm going to split this into two categories, beginner and professional.

Beginner: KDEnlive. (Simple, less crashes, supports multi-thread rendering, I think basic compositing, though I haven't used it as much as the next one)

Professional: Blender (Includes 3d modeling, transform strips, raytrace-based photorealistic 3d, compositing, the list goes on...)

 

Vector graphics is another one where it's all about workflow, like with photo and video. If you want all the tools, Inkscape has given me the best luck, but Libreoffice includes Draw, which seems targeted at flowcharts, Calligra includes Karbon, which is probably more friendly in interface, but I hardly know it, so I have no idea, and there are probably more I haven't even heard of.

 

Audio is possibly the most multifaceted part of your list. Here's what I use, based on the task I'm using it for:

Quick, cheap edits: Audacity

Live sound: Ardour

Sequencing: LMMS

MIDI: Haven't in a while, but Ardour again

Sheet Music: MuseScore

 

All of the audio applications above (except Ardour) are also available in Windows. Ardour is available as well on MacOS.

 

Honestly, I do believe that aside from security (which is generally better across the board, though not impenetrable) and speed (which is mostly improved, though their are areas Windows can do better), Linux is notable for how well it allows scripts and odd setups. Keeping this in mind, it isn't a far fetched expectation for you to install all of these and still have a stable system, so experimentation is probably your best bet.

i say this and it is because I'm used to photo shop, I'm sure its just as simple once you learn where everything is.
