Is the gt 1030 a good upgrade for my Optiplex 9020 SFF?

juansupremo

Since I have an prebuilt pc (dell optiplex 9020 sff) and cant afford a new pc, can the gt 1030 be the best upgrade option I have? or there are better options? (my pc is currently with a 8400 gs)

1030 is trash value. buy used or get a 1050/560

13700k, 3070, 32GB@3200

OP has a pre-built, so I doubt he can use any GPU that requires a 6 or 8 pin.

RX 460, GTX 950, GTX 750 Ti, GTX 1050, GTX 1050 Ti are your best options.

a cheap corsair 450watt paired with a rx480/580 or 470/570 will be nice, especially if the prebuilt has an i7 4770.

A GeForce GTX 1050 Ti low profile variant or equivalent is a much better upgrade option for up to USD $80 more depending on AIB variant.

I don't think the particular pre-built has an i7 CPU. The Dell OptiPlex 9020 SFF targets businesses, and we know that i7 CPUs tend to consume more power when under typical load.

Look if you can find a used GTX 750ti or GTX 950 at good price and call it a day

if you can afford it get a GTX 1050

worst case scenario do some modding, a 1070 mini should fit.

Okay then. The low profile GPU implies that it will take little space. Hell, they even have half-height brackets on them ?

If you need examples, take a look at the one from MSI.

It's quite upgrade over your current gpu, however like some have pointed out, it's not a good value.

I guess it comes down to your budget and your existing specs.

If  budget is a concern and if you can swing it, I would suggest a low profile gpu of the x50 variety such as a 750ti/950/1050 with "ti" for better performance, depending on availability and pricing.

Definitely, if necessary a case + glue (for mobo standoffs) is super cheap.

Here's a question I don't if it's been asked or answered... does this sff dell have room for a single or dual slot GPU?

Breifly lookin and if the pictures are correct, it up shows the x16 slot might only accept single slot GPUs, limiting your options. However, there might be an open ended x4 slot that might allow for a dual slot gpu.

Well, I have an 8400gs and it has a DVi and Hdmi on one slot, but the VGA one (that i think it is supposed to be on the same slot as the other inputs)  is on another slot. I know it sounds stupid, but  does that make it a dual slot GPU?

Just found this video. As you can see my best option 1050ti (low profile), but since I want to spend around 100$, then the 1050 is the card i am looking for. (But their power consumption is high, that is why I thought the gt 1030 was the best option, besides the size of course)

I was able to put a msi gtx 1050 LP in a 9020 sff. I put it in the 4x slot. I played doom last night for about an hour, it works well.

It was over 6 months ago, however since I am doing the same project now and realized how much misinformation has been posted about this all over the internet I figured I would go back and correct all of threads I looked at.

For me and many others this information is still relevant. I made a post over at toms hardware that has my latest findings.

Also @hockey930 considering today's GPU prices, the GT 1030 appears to have similar price/performance to the GTX 1050.  Also the 1050 Ti and up, and maybe RX 460 and definitely RX 470 and up are grossly overpriced.
