Google's Seurat enables PC quality environments on mobile VR

This looks absolutely fantastic. It basically allows developers to define a space where the user can move around and interact with a scene from, then the program will calculate all necessary viewpoints in the scene. This allows the number of polygons to be reduced by 1000x and the textures by 300x with no perceptible loss of quality. The video above demonstrates a scene that took an ILM render farm 1 hour per frame to complete takes only 13ms on a Snapdragon 835 based chip.

 

This could radically change the story driven semi on-the-rails narratives for mobile VR platforms. Even games would benefit from this as interactivity is preserved.

Combined with the work that Google is doing with mobile neural nets and Nvidia's Neural Net Raytracing speedup we could be looking at a huge leap in graphical fidelity in mobile platforms. (RIP Imagination's bet on mobile raytracing)

Film quality CGI.....yeah that'd be good if it didn't look extremely obvious or bad in the majority of films.

I've changed the title to more accurately reflect the techs capabilities. Basically the tech allows for environments and scenes that can't be run in real time on a high end desktop to run on mobile. This isn't limited to film environments, it could expand to any VR environment.

Those shaders look very strongly reminisce of what I've seen in Unreal Engine 4. With a pre-determined viewing angles, a developer can take occlusion techniques much further. Modern devices have plenty of shader power, though they tend to be short on bandwidth.

I assume this will also have an impact on console and PC VR if Google open sources the tech. Most environments are constrained to some extent so the speedup/fidelity increase could be significant

That's interesting. Still VR needs to improve a lot more for me to take interest. I know it will take generations until hardware can get good enough and so called "stabilize" so that we can have a great VR HMD to buy without any issue and definitely not too pricey. Also games to follow, to have actual good intuitive mechanics and also graphics to follow in standard and look realistic enough. Today it's all clunky and cartoony and requires good enough hardware and performance is just yet acceptable for visuals etc. Most what I've seen or tried just feels like demos and all.
