Setting my FX9590 out to pasture...

Hey everybody,

I've decided to retire my aging FX9590 chip, ram & motherboard which i've had for a few years... I'm look at either a Ryzen 7 1700X or a i7-7700K Intel processor. My gut is telling me to go Intel.

Either way, I'm going G.Skill TridentZ memory and an ASUS motherboard, either TUF Mark 1 or Crosshair VI Hero...

Just wanted to get people's thoughts before I pull the trigger...

Thank you for your responses...

The main purpose of this machine has been gaming... But i don't really want to dedicate this machine into only gaming or only productivity or development. I do all three pretty much and like having options of going either way with any of my machines...

Nah, the 7700K will still be better in games for the next 3-4 years. But if you get the Ryzen 5 1600, you have more headroom to do other things while gaming and it is cheaper, which is always good :D

In games? No. Gamers Nexus tested Ryzen with 3466MHz DDR4 and the overclocked Ryzen chip was still 10-15% behind the stock 6900K/7700K

well...i use an i7 myself, yes it's not a 7700K...but still overclocked haswell...close enough IMHO...and in some games i do see high CPU load on all cores/threads, and there are micro-stutters from time to time, which apparently is not there on ryzen 6 and 8 cores chip...reviewers seem to agree that gaming feel smoother on a multi-core ryzen chip, and to me it kinda make sense...personally if my CPU die i ain't buyin a 7700K...i'm getting a R5 1600.

Plus does it matter? 10% difference for a CPU in my opinion doesn't matter for gaming. Not to mention new APIs are going mainstream eventually so it's only going to get better.

TBH, all 6/8+ core CPUs feel smoother, because having more cores helps out with frametimes ;)

exactly...and a R5 1600 is cheaper than a i7-6800K which is the real competitor here...and if you clock the AMD to 3.9 or 4.0ghz it's faster than the OC 4.0/4.2ghz 6800K...even in single-threaded performance

The 7700K is just as smooth in most games. There are very few games where the i7 stutters, but when the 7700K stutters, it is more noticeable, because its average FPS are higher. :)

very few games...is already ''a few games'' too much for a 350$ CPU...and these are games from NOW or the past...what about...FUTURE games... o.O

Well, I'm gonna be honest with you, the 6800K sucks. A 5820K is cheaper and it performs better than the 6800K, because it overclocks higher :D Of course, the 1600 is MUCH better value than both

Multithreaded, yes. Single threaded? No, 5% slower than a 4GHz 6800K. But that 5% better single core performance doesn't justify paying 2x more
