I agree with you.  Throw that power supply away the first chance you get. But just the CPU, RAM, GPU and copy of Windows on the SSD are worth the $1,200.  At that point the HDD, Mobo, PSU, Case, Wifi Card, and Optical Drive are just gravy.

Optical drives are like the CD players in cars. Sort of a " *shrug* why not".

If it were a DVD/Blu-ray writer? Then why not indeed. I wouldn't mind having some huge backups on disks besides other places.

As I was saying above.  Even just the bare hardware (CPU, RAM, GPU, and the copy of Windows on the SSD) are worth the sale price.  At that point all the stuff you listed is disposable.

i still use an optical drive to watch films on my pc whilst i'm doing work, for the price, some of those lower end parts could be upgraded anyway

Stacks up alright against a similarly spec'd custom build, but it probably compromises on the cooler, motherboard, and power supply.
