AMD Vega with 16GB memory and 1600 MHz clock ( Confirmed )

Videocardz has just spotted and AMD card in CompuBench sporting 16GB of VRAM, and a clock speed of 1600Mz; along with 64 Compute Units.

It looks like another Vega card has cropped up, and has double the VRAM and 400Mhz more on the clock compared to the last TimeSpy leak; where an AMD card had 1200Mhz core clock and 8GB VRAM at 700Mhz ( HBM2 is rated up to 1000Mhz).

If clocked at 1600Mhz, it would indicate 13.1 TFLOPS in Single Precision which is not too shabby.

The new ID just popped up on CompuBench database. It is undoubtedly Vega: it was detected as gfx900 architecture, has 64 Compute Units and has new IDs confirmed by Linux patch to be Vega.

The reason why I didn’t name this post “Radeon RX Vega” is because we don’t know if this chip is Radeon RX, Radeon Pro or Radeon Instinct. It would work as a clickbait, but it might be misleading. AMD only confirmed two stack HBM2 for Radeon RX Vega and showcased a sample with 8GB on board. We simply don’t know if the 16GB HBM2 chip is planned for Radeon RX series.

Either way, the most interesting part of this leak is maximum clock frequency (CL_DEVICE_MAX_CLOCK_FREQUENCY). For comparison, Radeon RX 480 in CompuBench database has the same entry with 1266 MHz and Radeon RX 580 up to 1430 MHz (because most cards are overclocked). This could be an indicator that Vega has 1600 MHz maximum GPU clock. Whether that’s a frequency limit or actual boost clock, we don’t know yet.

Lastly, we have a confirmation that this particular ID has 64 Compute Units enabled. If AMD kept the same principle for GFX9 architecture (64 cores per cluster), then we should expect 4096 Stream Processors (64*64).

Now before anyone goes and gets a bit hyped we need to look at the VRAM for one. AMD's supplier is SK Hynix, and they have no 8GB stacks ready for production this year it seems; let alone 2.0GBps modules which two are needed of to obtain the 512GB/s Vega is supposed to have.

If that's still the case right now, this card found in CompuBench is likely either an Instinct card, or a Radeon Pro; which could allow them to use 4 dies of HBM2, as opposed to only two. Cost is not an option in the professional space, as it is for normal consumers; and HBM2 is rather expensive.

We've also seen Raja hold up the Vega die showing 2 HBM2 dies, but that could only be in relation to the consumer gaming cards.

It still a ways off before Computex and we get any solid information directly from AMD sadly.

Can't be a dual GPU given the specs list 64 CUs, it would show 128 CU if it was a dual card.

Also let's not forget, Instinct, and Tesla are not passive cooled; those racks they are in have fans significantly more powerful than we use in our PCs. It shoves a lot of air through them

1525 mHz is already a confirmed minimum (25 TFLOPs FP16 with 4096 SPs), so this isn't entirely unlikely. The 16GB HBM2 though, maybe. Maybe only for high-end WS boards or Titan XPp-class GPUs, but for gaming-oriented GPUs it's just gonna be too expensive.

Well this rumor I do consider believable: it wouldn't be an AMD GPU release without silly amounts of vram. I also like the logic of "If we had to wait so damn fucking long for HBM2 we're gonna make it worthwhile goddamn it"

Might well be the case, since SK Hynix aren't showing those modules in the catalogue; it hopefully means AMD has an early exclusive deal for it.

Although that might indicate to some extent that the rumor of only 16,000 GPUs for launch might be true. That would suck however.

16,000 GPUs for launch would be gone in a heartbeat in an astronomical price point... If they are consumer oriented cards, which is probably not the case.

Also it would mean almost none or none review samples.

Some discussion I saw said this might be the MI25 card.  It's some level of professional card, as the 16gb of memory really wouldn't do much for gaming.

AMD co-developed HBM with SK Hynix, so they probably get the first runs of whatever they're up to.

 

It's also possible that "small" Vega is using the lower bandwidth HBM2.

Even if it's GDDR5 16gb>11gb. Than again you would never need 16gbs right now and you would probably benefit from the faster 11gbs

If that was AMD's strategy no wonder why they're in short of HBM2 stacks, lots of SKUs with very little variation.

 

I'd like to see both AMD and Nvidia go - Low-End $125, Mid-Range $225, Semi-High-End $350, High-End $500, Ultra High-End $700+ - for all consumer-grade products.

If anyone here is thinking this is already the case, it's not since in the low and mid-range segments there are still variations in memory. Also, some stupid pricing tends to overlap some segments.

Yeah, too much mix of old and new. I'd say Vega was supposed to be last year though.

 

I too like the naming schemes. Lot's of generations could come out using that kind of naming scheme as this list here goes on.

Maybe when they run out of named stars, they'll be like X10-420FFS.

It was my understanding that Samsung was making the HBM2 for Nvidia, not SKHynix.

If that's the case we can then disregard my previous comment. 

 

But well considering this production node on either case is fresh off the oven the costs difference for the modules might be significantly less than down the line so AMD wouldn't be saving that much anyway by demanding smaller modules, so basically cause of the price it might be a "might as well" type situation.

AIBs buy from both. I remember this thing with the old 8800GT 1GB version as there were problems with the SKHynix version I think. Can't find the old articles though, could have been covered up already.

NVIDIA are using Samsung's 1.4Gbps modules on P100, and 1.6Gbps for V100, hence even Tesla V100 not having 1024GB/s bandwidth with 4 modules; it only has 900GB/s.

Although yeah, they could have prioritised the 8GB modules for enterprise cards only.

 

There's also the option of AMD also going to Samsung for 8GB modules, as SK Hynix are late.

Don't see 4GB HBM2 happening, even if it's more than enough with the caching tech in Vega. It just won't sell at all because dumb consumers seeing 4GB on an AMD card and 8GB on an nVidia card and thus going for the nVidia card even though the AMD card is better.

I honestly don't think we're getting a huge number of SKUs with Vega.  But the naming, itself, seems like the more "likely to be true" rumor.  I saw a dump of recent AMD copyright filings and they're really going deep on the Astronomy theme.  Though "AMD Epyc" is going to be some VR tech, I think.
