High CPU usage when trying to update status using Google Chrome

I can't believe I'm using Microsoft Edge just to post this. And yes, you Edge users can probably gloat at the moment.

So I don't know if it's a bug in Chrome or a bug in the website. But when I tried using Edge to update my status, it handled it just fine.

If you have any gifs on your profile (such as in the recent visitors or friends blocks), as you appear to have, they cause Chrome's CPU usage to go fairly high. Unfortunately, aside from disabling gifs (which I somehow suspect wouldn't be popular), there's nothing we can do about that.

I don't have GIFs in my profile. When I was accessing my profile page, that Chrome tab froze and became unresponsive. I can't believe I have to use Edge just to make a status update.

seems normal, specs? tabs?

30% CPU usage isn't normal when trying to update your status with Google Chrome

Something wrong with your Chrome, then - I doubt that IPB would ship it with problems like that. Mine is fine. Not to mention it's just some javascript; Edge would (most likely) experience the same problem if it were a problem with the site itself.

I can't reproduce this on linux, and when I tried to reproduce it on my windows VM, my whole computer died, and ended up needing linux to be reinstalled, so I don't plan to try that again any time soon.

If you can reproduce this, can you open the dev tools while it's using lots of resources, and switch to the performance tab. Record the performance for several seconds, when the page is actually performing poorly, then stop the recording and right click -> save the profile, then PM it to me. I will take a look at it at some point, to see if there's anything that stands out as being potentially responsible for the performance issues.
