NSA-derived ransomware worm is shutting down computers worldwide

• A Self-replicating ransomware is shutting down computers all over the world, in part by appropriating an NSA exploit that was publicly released last month by the mysterious group calling itself Shadow Brokers

• The malware, known as Wanna, Wannacry, or Wcry, has infected at least 75,000 computers in 99 countries (3 hours ago), according to Avast

  • List of AV software updated to handle the malware (Red result means it was detected): https://virustotal.com/cs/file/b9c5d4339809e0ad9a00d4d3dd26fdf44a32819a54abf846bb9b560d81391c25/analysis/

• Organizations in at least 74 countries have been affected, with Russia being disproportionately affected, followed by Ukraine, India, and Taiwan

• Infection is spreading at ~100 IPs per minute.

• The malware is notable for its multi-lingual ransom demands, which support more than two-dozen languages.

• Wcry is demanding a ransom of $300 to $600 in Bitcoin to be paid by May 15, or, in the event that deadline is missed, a higher fee by May 19.

• The messages left on the screen say files will remain encrypted. It's not yet clear if there are flaws in the encryption scheme that might allow the victims to restore the files without paying the ransom.

• According to an article posted by Madrid-based El Mundo, 85 percent of computers at Telefonica, Spain's dominant telecom, are affected by the worm, although that figure has not been confirmed

• Has caused a lot of chaos in the UK NHS with many hospitals requesting the public do not travel to A&E today due to the attacks.

• WanaCrypt0r first spotted a few weeks ago, but the ransomware for the most part was hardly distributed.

• Suddenly, WanaCrypt0r exploded and began spreading like wildfire through an exploit called ETERNALBLUE

• This exploit works by gaining access to a remote machine via the SMBv1 protocol.  

• M$ patched this flaw in March as MS17-010, for Vista and above but many people did not install it.

 

How it works

• Installer creates an encrypted zip with all of the malware files.

• Malware files are extracted with ransom notes in all popular languages

• WanaCrypt0r will then download a TOR client

  • TOR is used to communicate with ransomware servers at .onion addresses

• It gives EVERYONE permissions to all files and folders

• All database and mail server processes are stopped as data used by these will be encrypted too

• All files are encrypted. When encrypted the “.WNCRY” extension is added

• It stores the following in every folder that is:

  • @Please_Read_Me@.txt ransom note

  • @WanaDecryptor@.exe decryptor

• Requests admin privileges from the user with a UAC prompt to do the following:

  • Clear the Shadow Volume Copies

  • Disable Windows startup recovery

  • Clear Windows Server Backup history

• The computer background is changed

• Wana Decryptor 2.0 launches with the ransom note in your local language

• the system is designed to classify individuals based on a low, medium, or high risk of committing a future offense

• How was the system made?

  • Data for the Harm Assessment Risk Tool (Hart) was taken from Durham police records between 2008 and 2012.

  • The system was then tested during 2013, and the results were monitored over the following two years.

  • Forecasts that a suspect was low risk turned out to be accurate 98% of the time,

  • Forecasts that they were high risk were accurate 88% of the time.

• The tool has a built in predisposition - it is designed to be more likely to classify someone as medium or high risk, in order to err on the side of caution and avoid releasing suspects who may commit a crime.

  • Designed to screw over inmates?

• The audio driver installed on some HP laptops includes a feature that records all the user's keystrokes and saves the information to a local file, accessible to any third-party or malware that knows where to look.

• This file is registered to start via a Scheduled Task every time the user logs into the computer. The file "monitors all keystrokes made by the user to capture and react to functions such as microphone mute/unmute keys/hotkeys."

• Researchers said they found the Conexant HD Audio Driver Package pre-installed on 28 HP laptop models

• In response to a proposed rollback of net neutrality, this week John Oliver encouraged viewers to post to a public comment thread on the FCC’s website with support for strong regulation

• But then thousands of identical comments defending deregulation were posted

• The posts were from seemingly different concerned individuals with addresses attached.

• When contacted, these individuals said they did not write the comments and have any idea where the posts came from.

• more than 58,000 such comments were posted, with 17,000 of those posted in the last 24 hours alone.

• The personal data of the supposed posters likely came from a previous leak that affected 1.4 billion people’s data (source 2).

• At the Build Conference this week, Microsoft confirmed that full support for keyboards on Xbox One will be available through UWP cross-platform development and the still-in-preview Xbox Live Creators Program.

• But Xbox Advanced Technologies Group's James Yarrow told developers that they can't rely on mouse input in their Xbox One apps and games, at least for the time being.

• "initially, most models of mice won’t be compatible. However, a handful of mice will be, and Microsoft hopes to add support for all mice over time."

  • Even then, developers will have to code support for the new control system into their games. That could be easy for games that are already being developed for Windows with UWP porting in mind, but it might be a bigger lift for more console-centric developers.

If you're using somba make use it's using SMB 2 (or later) explicitly, and no one had a share set up with SMB 1. As that's a route in for the worm.

I have the same problem here. Went to watch the afterparty as a VOD on Twitch, realized it's not there. Pls fix. I can't watch WAN Show Live, it's at 1:30 in the morning

At 12:25 he went back to it only to get sidetracked again and then around 18 minutes he finally made his point -- this isn't the first time we've seen a rumor that Intel is renaming the HEDT platform with i9's.

Same problem here, I can see clips from it but can't see the whole thing.  WAN Show is late enough in the UK so I tend to watch the next day but am really interested in what was discussed after.  Now.... Scrapyard Wars time!
