Tesla opens pre-orders for the solar roof tiles

"“typical” customer in the US can expect to pay $21.85 per square foot of solar panels.

 

A Tesla solar roof for a two-story, 2,000-square-foot home in New York state would cost around $50,000 to install after federal tax cuts, and would generate $64,000 in energy savings over 30 years, according to the company’s solar roof calculator."

Bring on the solar revolution :D. In his recent TED talk Elon Musk said he wanted to offer an 'infinity warranty' but was blocked by his legal department. He posted a video demonstrating the tile's durability with a 'hail cannonball'

I assume as well as a normal roof if not better. They're meant to be far more durable than standard roof tiles but that won't help when it come to being ripped off.

Tesla has a video of a ball dropping on to their tiles vs conventional tiles, and it is stronger. Hurricane will block sun though

True, this is first gen technology which always has the trait of being a premium, hopefully they'll use the car model and use the finances to develop cheaper tech for mass market use.

How good is your return on investment on common roof tiles?

 

Also 30 years is for the US whre energy is almost free due to shitting on mother nature and clean air. Other countries will see their ROI as early as 5 years ;-)

Don't forget the solar factor when selling a house. Powerwalls will definitely net you a higher price.

How do they do with snow? I assume they don't work at all. How about ice? What is there load bearing limit? What wind speed are they rated for?

Transparent PV coatings are a thing, and they are currently researching for commercial applications for sure. I have a mate doing a PhD on them. The main limitations are the durability and efficiency of these type of panels.

It's cheaper when you factor in that regular tiles do nothing, and these produce electricity.  But I don't think they were ever planning to be cheaper to purchase compared to regular tiles.  They simply always used clever/deceptive marketing to make it sound like they would.

If memory serves they didn't specify tiles in their original blurb, they said roofing. Which would include traditional shingle and steel roofing. Now in new construction where you can floorplan and roof specifically for solar? sure. Single big flat canted roof with southern exposure in the US? Square foundation slab? probably a worthy investment. Random people living in places where electricity is cheap and this roof would cost half again the cost of the house? Better to simply retrofit traditional solar cells.

I think they were saying over the life of the house, and so its still technically true. The theory is they would need less replacing and would reduce your bills over time.

 

The issue will all these renewable techs has always been that high initial cost. They always pay themselves off it just takes 10 to 30 years depending on the tech and the cost of power in the area.

I think they were always comparing to tile roofing, ceramic or stone.  It would be nearly impossible to compete with regular shingles, I mean, they are basically just gravel and tar stuck to some paper.

Yah, Surviving hail is not too hard. But when the roof itself gets ripped off under the tiles, doesn't much matter what they can handle.

This is actually disappointing to me. I was h oping to finally have a genuine market solution for solar roofing for my future house. With this kind of pricing though it would be cheaper to shingle with steel and get solar cells. I do hope they improve costs down the line. If it gets to a decent $/sq.ft. it will be a true contender. And I mean without tax incentives or credits.

Pretty much... Hail comes from a fixed position which is the sky but wind is random in hurricane conditions.

I dunno the mounting system and modern roofing construction means they'll basically turn your roof into an epically inefficient flying wing. We may see some record settings flight times.
