How does Linus get his movies? Any idea?

I often hear Linus talking how he streams all his movies and TV shows of his NAS, but how is he getting all the movies?

I mean, does he buy bluerays (or even 4k disks) and rip them to a mp4 file? Or does he torrent all his media? 
 

If you have any ideas, please let me know.

He's mentioned that he rips them himself. He believes if he buys a DVD he should be able to watch it however he wants.

Given his business, it's extremely unlikely that Linus makes use of piracy to obtain his media, nor does he likely have the time to do so.

i think the way it works in australia is, "if you have had a piece of media that you have owned for a certain amount of time you may back up it's contents if desired"

Blu-Ray SATA drive + MakeMKV (optionally, + Handbrake to compress to smaller file sizes) + Plex

 

= awesome setup

 

MakeMKV is software that allows you to rip your legally owned DVDs and Blu-Rays to an uncompressed MKV file. You have the option of stripping out unneeded audio and/or subtitle tracks from the movie. 

 

These files tend to be pretty large - usually in the 15GB to 30GB range. 

 

If you need to save space, use Handbrake to compress the movies (you can optionally also convert from MKV to MP4 at this stage as well). 

 

Then you add them to your Plex Server, which can stream out the movies to other devices using the Plex Client, available on pretty much all types of devices. 

 

Plex server can run on most NAS OSes, including QNAP, Synology, and FreeNAS. You can also install Plex onto a regular computer, such as Windows, macOS, or Linux. 

 

You then set "watch folders" and dump your ripped media into those folders, and Plex will categorize them and download metadata and movie posters, etc. 

 

It works quite well.

I did not say whether the process itself was legal. I said that it allows you to rip your legally owned DVDs and Blu-Rays. Meaning, you went out and bought a DVD or Blu-Ray from an authorized reseller (Eg: Amazon or Walmart).

 

This statement makes no pretense at making a claim about the legal status of the ripping itself.

 

Had I put "legally" before "rip", then your statement would be true - as is, it is not.

To clarify though, format shifting is only KINDA legal, even in Canada.  While 'Format Shifting' is legal in Canada, there's a big fat catch, you have to format shift without bypassing any locks or encryption, the Copyright Modernization Act is actually specific on this.  So if you have to decrypt your BDs or DVDs to rip them, you are still actually violating copyright law in Canada, even if you could rip your own un-encrypted media just fine.

 

Keep in mind, I'm not advocating or denouncing anything with this post, only pointing out the specifics of the law.

Oh I agree 100% with what you're saying. But I never said ripping was legal :P - just that the DVDs and BluRays I purchased were legally obtained :D

 

Though I personally think that Canadian Copyright Law should be updated so that decrypting things like DVDs and BluRays for the purpose of ripping is legal.

Am I the only one around here that stopped watching movies because of this? I mean, I love books, movies, music and games, and BY FAR the most difficult to buy and enjoy of the 4 is movies! I have a bunch of blurays but I feel so stupid everytime I buy a bluray and then I have to watch all that crap about not pirating the movie... DUDE, I'm the one buying this! Leave me alone in my leaving room!

Blu-Ray disc -> Blu-Ray SATA Drive -> MakeMKV -> Plex = no more having to dig out a disc every time you want to watch a movie :P

 

Granted, there's a bit of prep work and getting the right flow for ingesting the movies onto a computer and into Plex, but over the long run, it's quite convenient. Especially if you're like me and you like to re-watch movies after a while.

 

If you only ever watch a movie once, you should either just rent them digitally, or stick to Netflix, etc.

I don't watch many movies mainly because lack of time, but that also means the few I watch I try them to be as good and meaningful as possible (one of the last ones was Moonlight, incredible photography work), but then again I have this internal debate, I feel dumb everytime I buy a bluray and I see all this barriers between me and watching my movie, I can't avoid to compare it against how easy is to read books, play games and listen to music. In the other hand, I'm a creator itself (game developer) so I do want to support the creators of the movies I watch, and then that branches again because I know for a fact how shit is the money most creators receive of their movies... Again... /rant

 

I'm pretty sure I'm the minority so I guess I'll feel like this until the movie industry can't keep the brake on and let us watch the damn movies alone, and pay for them. Not a fan of Netflix, but IMO we really have to be glad there's a new shark on the pool, they are really shaking things up, and with some luck in a few years they'll pick up fight with the big boys...

 

Until then my soul will be tormented each time I either pirate a movie or buy a bluray, because both things feel wrong to me...
