We only have like 35 million people - 4 million less than the state of California alone... I don't think Canada even shows up as a blip on their radar right now.

 

China and USA are the main target markets as far as I know - I doubt they'll spend too much on issues with Canadian policies until they start to receive complaints from American or Chinese tourists hoping to get footage when on vacation in Canada.

I wan't to give a different perspective about this new set of regulation. I am a student pilot and I heard countless stories of hit and near-hit with drones in flight. Here's my breakdown of the main component of the new set of regulation that I totally agree with according to my knowledge about flying an aircraft in Canada. Some other like the 30 metres rule is not my concern here.

 

-Do not fly closer than 9km from an airport, heliport or aerodrome.

+NORMALLY, the controlled zone around an airport is 5 nautical miles. In this airspace, aircraft are flying low and are very vulnerable to any sort of collision. Yes, your drone could kill people if they are ingested by an engine or damage a critical part of the aircraft. 5 nautical miles is about 9 kilometers.

 

-Do not fly higher than 90 meters.

+Really, what's the point of flying your toy higher than 90 meters? This again is to protect aircraft. If you're not using your drone as a toy and you need to fly higher, you must demand a permit.

 

-Within restricted airspace, including near or over military bases, prisons and forest fires.

+I don't think I will have to argue over the military bases and prisons part. This is obvious. The part about forest fires is because in the past, drones have been spotted near forest fires. This is VERY dangerous for firefighting aircraft. They are flying very low and you don't want to have a drone ingested in one of your engines because someone thought it was a good idea to film this.

 

I agree that some of the provisions are a bit too much. But I think that the main goal here is to prevent a major accident that could kill a lot of people.

 

I didn't discuss the rest of them but you should research the reason behind each provision before screaming about it. They considered the possibility that a terrorist could deliver a bomb using drones in a normally secure area by just flying over security checkpoints. That's an example.

I don't want to sound like a whiny exlcusionist, but companies like DJI and rich people with complete disregard for others are the reason some of the regulations are so restrictive. When FPV was at its infancy years ago, you didn't hear stories about phantoms crashing into private property or causing damage. Hobbyist understood that flying FPV (specially with goggles) had to be done safely, and not everyone had easy access to a drone. Nowadays, anyone with enough money can buy a drone, and because they didn't build it they don't fully understand all of its limitations and risks. Sure DJI drones fly themselves to a certain point, but human stupidity can still cause crashes and people getting hurt.
