Inform new users?

Guest

There should be something to inform new users at least on how to quote people when they want to reply to someone. I just don't see how this could be implemented but it would be a good addition.

Exactly, except lots of people don't read it. I see people all the time replying without quoting meaning there is a big chance they won't get a reply back from the person.

thing is, even if we pin it on top of every sections, sadly, people will still miss it, or if they read it, they won't read all of it :P

It should also tell new users to respond in a timely manner, instead of disappearing after asking a question.

Like "what is the best itx case"

a bunch of suggestions

OP never responds back

and that's the end of it.

Something like that. Like some quick links after registration or verification validation page (I honestly don't remember if we have such). CS, FPC, OT Welcome thread, note on how to report and contact mods. And some basic guide on how to use old style forums.

They might still read replies while not replying.

It's those threads where they're still asking questions about their builds or in the middle of trying to fix a problem.

or even just label the quote button

I wish forums would do that instead of the asinine nonsense where you have to have your posts approved by a mod before they become visible. That just pisses me off.

Although then you'll get a notification any time anyone posts in any thread you've ever posted in. Alternatively, you can just go to "unread content" and then use the ownership filter to filter by "content I have posted in", which imo is much better.

Not every topic that you've ever posted in. It just means that the "notify me of replies" toggle in the reply box is enabled by default. It's easy to opt out of per topic, and it doesn't affect existing topics that you have posted in, only posts that you make going forwards.

I remember on other forums, new member needs to have a minimum post count before they can start creating topics. This was to prevent, those one time poster from asking questions and never to be heard of again.

Yeah, it's a terrible way to grow a community or help people who might have a question -- which is the whole point of a forum in the first place. I genuinely despise using forums where I have to have every post approved by a mod.

I hate those too, wait to be approved by a mod. But the minimum post count before you can create a topic is okay I guess. Can't remember which one I visited a while back. Minimum was like 5 or 10 post count before you can start creating a topic. And it was easy, comment in bunch of random threads and voila, create thread achievement unlocked.
