Ubuntu 17, cant install anything.

Hi, I installed ubuntu 17 when it came out but i can't install anything at all, all that happens is this. Anyone know how to fix it?

Open terminal then issue the following command

 

Sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

Main Rig:-

You're going to have to be more specific than that, I don't see any problem in that screen - just an "install" button. Did you try pressing it? What happened then?

 

Try using the terminal as @Master Disaster suggested, does that work?

I've already tried that and it didn't work.

That's all that happens, i click install and it does nothing at all.

If you installed it, open /etc/apt/sources.list with a text editor and post what it says

remove the fist 2 lines and save the file, then try again and see if the issue is fixed

I can't. "You do not have the permissions necessary to save the file. Please check that you typed the location correctly and try again."

open a terminal, type "sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list", type in your password, delete the first two lines, save with ctrl+o and exit the editor with ctrl+x

It's still the same, nothing happens when i click install.

are you trying to install the open source chromium-browser or the closed version straight from google?

Ok, so it's not a problem with the system but with the package itself - read this. I recommend installing chromium instead, with sudo apt install chromium-browser.

The google version, but it's not just chrome that i cant install.

well you need to correct your /etc/apt/sources.list

the easiest way for you might be to go to the system menu, type software and open the program called "software & updates". Correct anything in there so the CDROM is unselected.

To install the google chrome browser follow instructions here https://www.google.com/chrome/

I have followed it, I had no problems on linux 16 just on 17.

pretty sure you should go to software & updates, correct your sources so it gets updates from the internet rather than the CDROM and then open the .deb file you downloaded
