How to start a BBS?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could assist me by telling me what I need to start a bbs. Also by bbs I mean like telnet into it not just a boring html forum.

Download the software for a bbs server, look at the source code, adapt it to accept connections on the telnet port and accept telnet connections.

 

Plenty of bbs server software and their source code can be found just by googling the name of the software or checking old ftp sites that host collections of MS-DOS applications

but imho it's a complete waste of time.  You could do the same job with mailing lists or with a newsgroup server or with just plain ftp server where users can only download or upload file and not overwrite or append to existing files.. each uploaded file is a new message.
