Sooooo...I just saw this email that was sent by Razer...

I guess bye bye Razer Comms...to be fair, did anyone even use it? I'm not surprised that they're closing it as I've never ever seen anyone use it... Ah well :P 

Anyway, any users of Razer comms will have to switch and you only have around 1 month (closes by 1st June) so...better get your ass moving?

i hear a lot of people liked it (iirc including linus and luke), but very few people used it.

Are you sure they actually liked it and weren't just shilling?

It seemed like they struggled to use it for their guests, and it seemed like they abandoned it and stopped talking about it completely as soon as they stopped getting paid.

It was a bit of an mixed bag program, it had good sound quality and all that.

But it worked only about 50% of the time. And they never really fixed it.

At first there were some problems with specific audio configurations and sound cards, so some people wouldn't be able to use it properly.
Also, the software got frequent updates which required a system restart.

This was during the first couple of months with Razer Comms, it drove lots of people off. Some of the bugs were never fixed.

These are the main reasons people abandoned it. Later Discord became the go-to platform.

Well I used it early on though. Haves a very solid UI along, worked ok too. Though it's been a while I guess, as said used alt ones.

I still remember the days where Razor Comms was sponsoring the Wan Show.

It was such a great program, so great in fact that when Linus was having guests on the Wan Show, he always made it absolutely clear that all of them were using Razor Comms. That's how great it was.

 

Right up until Linus screwed up and showed us multiple times that he was using Skype to talk with the guests.

Ironic that he previously lambasted Skype for being insecure. While he wasn't wrong in the general sense, closing some of the more important security holes Skype has client-side wasn't exactly rocket science.

 

On a related note: While we wait for services like Discord to at least do something here by Valve Time, is there any good clients out there for video conferencing?

I used it before I heard about discord. It was much better than Skype and easier to use than other services. I got my whole group of friends to use it but we switched to discord after almost a year.

pretty sure they mentioned it here and there much after razer comms stopped sponsoring, usually along the lines of "it used to be so good"
