Intel 5960x(box pack) + asus rampage 5 extreme (used) combo for 570$ or Ryzen 1800x / 1800 for gaming and photo/video editing?

Are Ryzen 1800x/1800 worth it over 5960x(box pack/New) and asus rampage 5 extreme combo(used) both for 570$ from a friend who is selling it?

I'll be using the PC for gaming, photo/video editing.

Ryzen has similar core performance to Broadwell, so that would be better than the 5960X.

ryzen is quite a bit better for multi threaded applications. just make sure you get good memory.

At that price I would consider the 5960X, depending on it's history.

If you choose to go with Ryzen, get a 1700 over a 1700X/1800X. It is the same chip, comes with a stock cooler, and overclocks to effectively the same performance.

I get atrocious performance with my Ryzen CPU in my workloads (handbrake x265 encoding). With my R7 1700 @3.8GHz performing very similar to my old 3930K @3.6GHz and half of that of my 6900K (very similar to 5960X). Ryzen doesn't perform well in some applications, so check benchmarks for the specific programs you intend to use.

Vegas is what I use.

And this chip does 4.5 Ghz @ 1.185v which imo is silicon lottery.

Can't be that sure about ryzen.

I may also be going for a sli setup.

If you can get the motherboard and CPU for $570 and they're not dead, that's a damn good price. Even if you choose to go with the Ryzen, just pick up the 5960x and turn it around on Ebay for $700.

Does your friend know that a 5960x priced at $700 would sell within 24 hrs on Ebay?

Selling to friends at a significant discount is a nice thing to do and saves a lot of hassle. It is worth doing it at a lower rate.

I would grab the 5960X.

X370 boards support SLI, so that shouldn't be an issue whichever you choose.

I'd also go for the 5960X especially at that price. That's pretty nice of your friend.

Though do you have the cooling to handle the OC?
