Would an air cooler suffice for Ryzen 1700X?

Hello,

I'm planning to buy a Ryzen 7 PC. I'm not going to overclock my CPU. And I don't play games. I'm a content creator.

Currently, all the options I've got is like this...

  • Ryzen 7 1700
    Stock cooler

I'll use a Gigabyte B350 Motherboard with any of these choices with Corsair 16GB 3200 RAM.

In my local retailer shop, that Deepcool cooler is the only available cooler that is compatible with AM4. So I don't have much of a choice. And I don't really want to go for liquid cooling because it is high in cost.

So my question is, does Ryzen 1700X with air cooler perform less than Ryzen 1700 with stock cooler? Or does the lower 1700 outperform the 1700X in this situation?

Of course it would.  I'm putting a Cryorig H7 on my 1600x that I plan on overclocking a bit.  I think those are $35 on newegg right now.

SFF-ish:  Ryzen 5 1600X, Asrock AB350M Pro4, 16GB Corsair LPX 3200, Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro -75mV, 512gb Plextor Nvme m.2, 512gb Sandisk SATA m.2, Cryorig H7, stuffed into an Inwin 301 with rgb front panel mod.  LG27UD58.

Aging Workhorse:  Phenom II X6 1090T Black (4GHz #Yolo), 16GB Corsair XMS 1333, RX 470 Red Devil 4gb (Sold for $330 to Cryptominers), HD6850 1gb, Hilariously overkill Asus Crosshair V, 240gb Sandisk SSD Plus, 4TB's worth of mechanical drives, and a bunch of water/glycol.  Coming soon:  Bykski CPU block, whatever cheap Polaris 10 GPU I can get once miners start unloading them.

MintyFreshMedia:  Thinkserver TS130 with i3-3220, 4gb ecc ram, 120GB Toshiba/OCZ SSD booting Linux Mint XFCE, 2TB Hitachi Ultrastar.  In Progress:  3D printed drive mounts, 4 2TB ultrastars in RAID 5.

Who buys things local anymore?  For less money it can be on my doorstep in 2 days, and I don't even have to be sober or dressed to buy it.

That is a very high-end cooler. But not available in my country. I have no other option than that Deepcool cooler.

I'd go with the 1700X. It'll out perform the 1700 if both are at stock (but OC'd, ATM they're basically tied).

I do, besides supporting the local economy, I get to know if shit is broken spectacularly from shipping before I spend a cent. I also can go back to the place if it doesn't work, and likely get a working unit instantly.

Once one factors shipping and handling, the fastest method is more expensive and you're still waiting for your order to process before it even ships. The cheapest method might be cheaper than local, but they can put wait times out to two weeks, depending on the item.

With local shops, you typically only have to wait for the drive/walk/bike ride back.

And for me, online is more expensive 100% of the time, after figuring taxes for local shops and S&H online. Hell, I bought my 1070 for $550, a decent price gouge, and it was still cheaper than every site that had them available that I could find.

They really are, buy something like the 212 evo when you have the Wraith is bloody pointless,

There actually is, your retailer is simply selling the OEM/WOF chip which sadly isn't bundle to the cooler, these are quite less common... tough luck.

Getting the 1800x makes sense if you want the full ryzen performance without overclocking however the 1700x like the 1600x is pointless, just get the 1700 and overclock it, a Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4 would be ideal for air cooling.
