"Gaming" replacement of Surface Book ~$1300 USD

Just now, Pendragon said:

No because the 7700HQ is 6700HQ + 300mhz. It's a 3.4ghz 4 core turbo boost cpu. It's meh, better than the 6700HQ, but not by much. Also the laptop you linked often goes on sale for $1250. Only grab it on sale at that price if budget is what you're looking for.

Otherwise the RP6 will be fine. You'll see maybe a 10-20% performance difference running a maxed out 4.2ghz 6820HK vs a 6700HQ. The 7700HQ is only maybe 3-5% better and not noticable.

Sorry I'm a little confused. what do you mean by RP6?

Off topic. I've never owned a Surface book, but I watch these commercials with a female graphics/animator for Marvel, who has a commercial where she is editing scenes from the Dr. Strange movie. Looking at the specs, I find it difficult to believe her claims of doing much of her graphics work on said Surface Pro. This is just a marketing line of nonsense right?

well, it has a U series dual core and a 965M

maybe she does edits locally and sends them to render farm?

idk

much better than the GL702. There's a 17in version in the same link. Runs cool, as a MUX switch for extended battery life. Doesn't throttle. Better quality higher. I just hate the 6700HQ on both of them because 3.1ghz quad core 8 threads is a real bottleneck (in terms of clock speed) for intensive games.

6700HQ is more than enough for a 1060

Would you say that a 3770 is going to bottleneck a 1060? obviously not.

there's only a ~20% clockspeed difference between the two, and the skylake model has higher IPC (ivy → skylake is... dunno close to 15% IPC? Maybe I'm wrong with this one)

so basically a 6700HQ is only very slightly worse than a 3770, which is still an extremely capable GPU, and doesn't bottleneck my brother's 1070 even in battlefield 1.

no. they dont. its 3.1 ghz 4 core turbo boost. so during intensive games like witcher 3 that utlize all 4 cores, its at 3.1ghz. which is shit. they also never even reach 3.8 ghz. 3.5ghz is max 4 core turbo boost.. where do you even get the 3.8ghz from.

Also search up benchmarks running the 1060 with varying clockspeeds. huge difference. yes its not as huge, but compared to a 4.2ghz CPU like my 6820HK, its pretty huge.

It must have been a misprint on the page.

If an oc'd 3570 @4.2 was not bottlenecking an OC'd 480 8 gig (A decent 1070 would though) the 6700HQ is not bottlenecking a 1060.

Dave Lee has a comparison of gaming laptops around the 1k budget mark on his channel, quite recent.

I'd try to get a refurbished Inspiron gaming with a 1050 ti and the 1080p IPS panel. Toss in an SSD and you have a solid gaming laptop that lasts 6+ hours.

If your brother or you have anyone with a desktop setup run BF1 at 4.2-4.5ghz and then clock it down to 3.1ghz (because mobile and desktop cpus are the same when they are clocked the same), you'll see the difference. Much worse average, much worse 0.1% as well.

An oc'd 3570 @4.2 is much better than the 6700HQ. LOL. Literally EVERY single OCable Haswell mobile chip is better than the 6700HQ. People running 4720HQ's OCed slayed the 6700HQ. Skylake took a step back in performance and focused on efficiently.

IDK, I'm pretty darn sure, especially with most games distributing across 4 threads well and 8 threads almost as well, he is going to be pretty happy with the performance from the 6700HQ. If he could find a 6700HK for a similar price I'd recommend that since almost all their mobile boards allow oc'ing. The 7820HK isn't worth the price upgrade in my opinion. We can beat this to death, but he needs something portable he can AAA game on (and some cpu intensive games and apps like world of tanks, along with some games that need the extra horse power of the 1060) and be productive on for $1300 or under, preferably with an ips screen. If you can think of anything better, please share, as I am at a loss.

oh no, you misunderstand. i never said the 6700HQ wasn't the best current value. I just said I don't like the 6700HQ. the P670RP6 (or anything with a 6700HQ with a 1060 is the best value in this segment).

6700HQ is shit imho

Intel has been sitting on their fucking hands with the mobile performance scene, there is NO REASON why a 4800MQ from 2013 is beating out a 6700HQ...

Dude the 4800MQ beats the 7700HQ. I swear OCed Ivy Bridges beat the 7700HQ.

You mean 3.94Ghz? Cause those babies OCed to 4.0ghz quite common.

Nah, 2.94. 2570p only allows 104.4BCLK through flashing Intel ME

Khenglish built the ROM, considering flashing it when I get my 3740QM

idk
