GPU at 100%

ripper101

I've recently discovered a problem with my PC when I went to take a food break and came back to hear my GPU fans running loud while I was on the desktop. Upon further investigation, I realized after about a minute of because inactive on my PC my GPU goes to 100%. When I move my mouse or anything it stops and goes back to normal. It even does this when gaming making it completely unplayable at 20fps. I've provided a video to hopefully shed some light on the problem since I don't really have much info on what is happening.

Sounds like you've got a miner installed on your computer.

You know, it crossed my mind.... but I don't remember installing one.

If you did, it'd be showing up in task manager anyways. Chances are that it wasn't you that installed it. You might want to run a few deep scans.

He means a miner virus.

You do not install it knowingly and it runs in the background mining currency for someone else.

Like an AV scan? I only have Windows Defender if that works. Is there a program to see where GPU usage is coming from?

Yeah, just download avast or malwarebytes. As per the flow of information, resource monitor might be able to tell you.

While this is a valid option, let's refrain from suggesting everyone reinstall Windows. Otherwise I'll just start suggesting pen and paper, hand overclocking, and triple-channel ink.

If OP has a virus the best solution would be to reinstall windows, unless it's a rootkit.

So I have a hard drive with a lot of shadow plays and only shadow plays. Do I have to wipe that too?

Go to Kaspersky.com. Find the Rescue Disk, make a bootable of it, start it up, do a deep scan, and hope for the best. If it finds nothing, check for registry changes, driver issues (DDU), and check if deleting Afterburner helps.

If it is an infection, we really have no idea what type, or to what degree the system is compromised. If the system is still able to function and perform tasks, it makes more sense to try and remedy the issue with the current install. There's no guarantee that reinstalling Windows will rid you of the virus, but if it doesn't, you do know where to look for it. It's unfortunate to have to do, but it does eliminate a lot of variables. Still, I would begin with simply running a few tools to see if you can't rid yourself of the bug without having to resort to a reinstall.

Some other utilities that are commonly used are rkill and TDSSKiller.
