Upgrading to 7700k vs new MOBO and Ryzen

I currently have a i5 6500 and a z170 motherboard, I am planning on upgrading in a few months, would it be better to upgrade to a new i7 or would it be a better deal to get a ryzen motherboard and CPU.  I only use this for gaming, and I would sell the old parts

 

EDIT:  I will be streaming as well

EDIT 2: Not many people seem to notice, but this is between upgrading to a 7700k vs upgrading my MOBO and getting ryzen

i7 7700k is the best gaming CPU currently.

Unless you need the extra cores for something besides gaming the 7700k is definitely the way to go especially if you already have a motherboard that can support it. I would remind you to update the bios before you sell the i5 that way it can support a caby lake cpu.

The 7700k if you are a pro gamer gaming with a 1080 ti or higher gpu gaming at 144 or 280hz, at 1080p.  other than that you are losing out as you will not freshly install windows or turn off background apps. the ryzen 1600 or 1700 have so much more cpu to give that you can have open programs and background programs without losing gaming performance.

ryzen 1600 or 1700 would be better for streaming, a 7700k can handle light streaming in 720p well,  unless you have a bunch of background tasks.

Streaming changes the game entirely and i'd have to say ryzen if you intend to stream. Here's why:

well to get a B350 Mobo an a 1700 would be about $100 more than getting just a 7700K

No need for the X. The 1700 will perform pretty much the same, got mine at 4GHz, and the included wraith spire cooler is pretty good even for mild overclocks so thats another $20-30 saving right there. Also RGBBBBBB

Well that would be a reason to want a cpu with extra cores. It will be better for streaming but worse for gaming if paired with a high end GPU at 1080. It's a tradeoff. I know it was a no brainer for me because I have a lot of things that I do for school that use the extra cores so I got the ryzen cpu instead of the 7700k even though the 7700k is cheaper. Also I have a 60hz monitor currently so the difference between the two is nonexistent at lower fps like 60.

I have a 1070 and run my games on my 1440p monitor, but if I want to get a ryzen CPU I need to upgrade my CPU and my motherboard, whereas if I got a i7 I would only need a CPU.  I am in high school so money is tight for me, and I can only really get summer jobs and I need it to be worth it.  Would you say it's worth it to upgrade both? I wouldn't buy it until late summer around September.

for streaming yes. for gaming no.

7700K, I have the same combo with i5-6500 and Z270. Plan to get a 7700K in the summer or so, less hassle to get Ryzen instead.
