there are other caveats too:

• SLI is not supported - video cards must be unlinked 
• if you have more than one display connected, all of them must support HDCP 2.2 or the stream will be reduced to 1080p

 

although Pascal based video cards were launched 1st, and nVidia made a selling point that they fully support Netflix UHD streaming, Intel was the 1st HW vendor to actually provide Netflix UHD playback with their Kaby Lake CPUs

since this "preview" requires an insider built, it's most likely that the capability is not baked into current retail version of W10 and would be added later with an update of sorts

FYI stripping HDCP 2.2 is easily doable, this was from almost a year ago. I haven't tested this myself as I don't consume 4k content anyway and have no need for a 2.2 stripper. There's a little more nuance to it than this thread makes it seem like, but it's doable.

And the best fucking part is they have this restriction as if adding complication prevents piracy. Movie piracy isn't a ton of people copying a movie and sharing it with friends, it's people who know what they're doing stripping content and throwing up the torrents. And they'll buy the equipment they need to rip it, it's a passion for them. People forget the pirates themselves are the ones that drop money on legitimately purchasing the physical media so they can rip it. They'll spend the money for a gpu and a device to strip the signal. And there's always 1080p. Most people that download pirated movies watch them on their PC anyway. There's not a big push for pirated 4k content, in fact a lot of the 1080p rips are really low bitrate as people prefer small files to better quality.

although, as far as I recall, GTX950 and 960 have HDCP 2.2 via DP 1.2

my guess is that's also up to MS to certify for PlayReady 3.0 DRM

I have a player that can stream 4K content.  I doubt that has a GPU like that in it.  (Though, streaming is useless for me with a 20GB cap)

But seriously, I said crap it and bought a player on sell.  Way cheaper than dealing with all the requirements to have the PC run that content.

umh .. no, not via CUVID acceleration - only GTX950 and 960

I didn't say that. I said it can output 4k content. I play 4k files on my 970 on a 4k TV...occasionally. Any other layers of complication are not necessary, but they're there for the purposes of the DRM. 

And IDK if it's the same, but I've used CUVID on that machine in MPC-HC. I don't know much about it, I think I use DXVA2

I still have the GTX970 and had issues with HW accelerating UHD content, dunno exactly if it was only 10bit tho
